WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns' unification title fight with IBF belt-holder Miguel Vazquez -scheduled for later this month - has been postponed because the Mexican is suffering from a virus.

The pair were set to meet on 16 March at Wembley Arena - on a card which was also set to feature WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly - but Vazquez's illness has forced promoter Frank ****** to push the event back a month.

The British pair will now headline the show at the same venue on Saturday, 20 April.

****** said: "It's very unfortunate that Vazquez has had to withdraw so close to the fight, but it is on medical grounds, which is beyond my control, due to his viral infection, and we have his doctor's certificate confirming this.

"Therefore I have had to postpone the fight, not cancelled as stated in some media reports, to Saturday 20th April at Wembley Arena.

"Everybody is disappointed by this postponement, but we have worked hard to ensure that Ricky's unification fight still goes ahead."

I feel bad for Burns, but I am confused by these conflicting rumours about whether the Vasquez fight is now postponed to April or outright cancelled. I am also confused about Burns lashing out at FW, it makes no sense unless there never was a deal signed, in which case why did Burns apparently not know this, as he has been going through a full formal camp? I still have hope that Burns still fights Vasquez, because unification fights still mean something, but if not, he should fight Broner. It is past time for Burns to start taking charge of his own career, and take fights that define his legacy.

It's postponed but the majority doubt it will actually happen at all. Ricky was going through a full camp from what I read. He's out of pocket by £12k due to training costs incurred.

It's terribly frustrating and doesn't look good at all. The people who have forked out hard earned money for this must feel particularly aggrieved. It's shambolic really. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks with this.

So Burns only allegedly took this fight to be busy between Broner bouts and keep him away from Broner. He tried to save face by facing a decent competitor for once only for the truth that the fight was never finalized to come out.

    Wow.
