I think he can. I remember how he impressed me in the Quintana fight by being a balanced boxer-puncher. Needs to get back to that.
I'm not saying he didn't take his beating like a man and tried to win. He succumbed to Roberts antics, he looked far too mellow in the build up.
I really doubt it. He just does not seem to have the skills or the mentality to keep at the highest level. I would like to see him come back and fight Jorge Silva (last guy Angulo fought). It would be a good keep busy fight and maybe we see Silva step it up on the big stage. I was very impressed by him fighting a much larger Angulo.
He wasn't in shape. Guerrero didn't have to do much convincing to get him to the ropes. Berto's legs were gone after one left hand. He has an average chin, but he doesn't recover at all. That's his biggest concern....and a lack of defense and footwork too. Way too much to overcome so late. Should have hired a new trainer years ago.
He was never really a force, he was a guy with great athletic gifts, but he has no D, no infighting skill, no footwork, below average skill and chin, and to much ego. At 29, I think he is to old. He still doesn't see that he has a problem, there is an excuse for every struggle.
All the physical tools are there. But the blueprint has been put out there on how to beat him. Looking at the top guys at 147,I don't see him beating any of them even with a new trainer.
He has great in-fighting skill and has amazing skill. He knows how to time uppercuts extremely well and is one of his major assets. He is a great fighter and he will be doing big things this year.
I don't know if he can beat any of the top fighters at 147... He needs a new corner.. Like MrMagic said, he seems to get discouraged if he's having a hard time in there.. He keeps on trying sure, but doesn't seem to have the same ferocity as when he's winning, which pretty much insures he doesn't change the outcome of the fight.
His manager believes in him alot look at this video with Chris Robinson, a great interviewer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzKSOutLXlI
