No, he was a self-created success who fought often, fought everyone (including blacks) and beat almost everyone he fought.

So unless you have something to back your assertion I suggest you abandon it. It carries no weight.

In that case, all three of Greb's fights with Tiger Flowers should have been landslide wins for Greb, right?

According to wiki the black press was born in the 1970's.
All im saying is the mythos could of been exaggerated to some extent.
This from a time when it was against the law to own footage of Jack Johnson beating white challenges.
Fight fixing was also predominant.

The Chicago Defender and the Pittsburgh Courier gave great voice to black folk during and before Harrys era.

 

Yes, but let's not forget that if ANY sport can be held up as a model for good and fair play as far as race relations in sports go, it is boxing. It wasn't perfect, but it was miles ahead of all other sports. We integrated over a half-century before baseball. Considering the virulent racism of the times, it would have been absolute simplicity to keep men like Joe Gans, George Dixon, Joe Walcott, Jack Johnson, Tiger Flowers or any other black fighters from coming within miles of a title shot.

Even Jack Johnson himself admitted that, considering his race and the level of animosity towards him, that it would have been easy to screw him out of the title in the Jeffries fight. Jeff could have elbowed, heeled, gouged, groin-punched or just about anything and gotten away with it if the powers that be decided to screw Johnson (Johnson commended Jeff for fighting clean and fair for this very reason). Conversely, Johnson could have been DQ'd easily for a blow that looked like it MAY have landed low. Or any other reason. But he wasn't.
