Anderson Silva Agrees to Defend Belt Against Chris Weidman at UFC 162

    After all the talk of Anderson Silva superfights died down a bit with Georges St-Pierre and Jon Jones both locked up in title fights, attention quickly shifted to who is next for the longtime UFC middleweight kingpin.
    Following Michael Bisping’s loss to Vitor Belfort, talk centered on Chris Weidman as the likely next challenger for Silva’s belt, and it appears that talk has born fruit.
    Long Island Newsday reporter Mark La Monica on Wednesday reported that UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta on Wednesday told Weidman that Silva had finally agreed to fight him on the promotion’s planned UFC 162 fight card on July 6.
    MMAWeekly.com later confirmed with sources close to the fight that the deal is done.
    Fertitta spoke to Weidman while the two were at the New York State Capitol in Albany, lobbying for the state to finally sanction mixed martial arts.
    “Dream come true,” Weidman told Newsday. “Ever since I’ve been fighting, Anderson Silva has been the champion and I’ve been visualizing beating him. Now I have the opportunity. I have to make the most of it.”
    Weidman is undefeated at 9-0 in his professional career, rolling through all five of his UFC opponents. His most recent victories include a knockout of Mark Munoz and unanimous decision victory over Demian Maia before the Brazilian jumped to the welterweight division.The New Yorker has been widely considered the No. 1 contender to Silva’s title since last summer, and any fog about that lifted when Bisping lost to Belfort.
    Silva (33-4) has never lost in the Octagon, winning all 16 of his UFC bouts. He has held the UFC middleweight championship since 2006, finishing all but two of his challengers.
    Silva is the most dominant champion in UFC history, and regarded as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
    He has been on the precipice of signing a new eight or 10-fight UFC contract, but at 37 years of age, has been targeting only the biggest fights on the biggest stages. Silva has lobbied hard for a fight with Georges St-Pierre, while UFC president Dana White has pressed for a Silva vs. Jones match-up.

    Silva vs another wrestler... I wonder what were going to get. I guess he the best choice of the top contenders ATM, but I see the Weedman getting smoked in less than 3. Then everybody dismissing the win.

    Mousasi or Jacare are the fights I would like to see. I know Jacare trains at blackhouse and Mousasi probably wont move down to middleweight but those are the fighters that would make great matchups against Silva.

    I wish Weidman had some more big fights to build up his hype but I'm pumped for it. Weidmans the real deal.

    He is a good matchup stylistically, but he has been off a while and is coming off of a bad injury/surgery. Not the ideal situation if you are taking on Anderson. He says he'll be good to go, but we'll see.

    I cant believe he fought Munoz last July, doesnt seem like it was that long ago. Im stoked for this fight, not really a fan of Silva so I hope weidman can get the win.
    Rob, youve got to strike when the Irons hot and as far as Weidman is concerned if he doesnt get this fight now then he runs the risk of losing in his "tune up" fight..

    185 is pretty **** I don't see too many people that would beat Weidman except vitor possibly

    When you are fighting a guy who is pushing 40 yrs of age, you can't really say you need a tune up. Silva is obviously not the average old guy but still, if he loses he can say father time finally caught up to him. If you're Weidman would you want him to make that excuse? Of course not. Basically there shouldn't be any pre fight excuses. Just fight. There really isn't such thing as a tune up in the UFC anyway. GSP came off a major injury and went straight to a fight with a top contender in Condit.

    Well, I'm thinking since no one's really challenging GSP at WW so might as well throw him at Silva. I thought Condit would've done the job, but GSP managed him rather easily aside for that head kick.

    The same reason I think Jones should also move up to HW at some point.

    Why do you think Weidman is a good matchup Rob?

    I dont think he poses a threat to Silva standing. In fact he will easily get picked apart.

    I dont think his GNP is will be enough to get a stoppage.

    You think he has a reasonable chance to submit Anderson? I dont.

    That leaves 5 round top control moderate GNP decision victory. 08 henderson couldnt do it. Okami couldnt do it, and Sonnen couldnt do it. Whats special about Weidman? Or are you counting on Silva's age to finally show.

    I see no danger for Silva.

    I meant as challengers to Anderson. But I'm not so sure about Weidman beating Jacare easy. Weidman had big problems with Maia, and I think only managed the split decision because he landed a few good strikes at the end of the third round. Jacare's striking is a little better than maia's so if the fight was to take place standing that just might make the difference. No way an easy fight for Weidman.
