Why don't fighters just throw the over hand right against the shoulder roll?

You posted a picture of a right hook. Just admit you made a mistake and end it.

 

Ray Leonard is one of the fighters I feel that could have improved his right hand timing. Don't get me wrong. Leonard was a good fighter, definitely an ATG, but he had bad timing and a lot of techniques were just not that good. It was all flashy flash.

 

I agree that this punch is very effective but it has to be set up properly with body work or else you'll eat left hook counters all night.

 

Ya. I'm talking about timing and body work of course. I'm not saying you just go out and throw non stop over hand rights. This is not a video game. this is real life boxing.

This is like saying or asking - why don't tall defenders just jump up and block Lebron James' shots? When I play basketball against midgets I block their shots all the time. You're comparing amateurs to the pros. It's silly.

It seems easy to you because you fought guys who haven't mastered the shoulder roll. In fact, very few people can. It's skill vs. skill. Watch how easy it was for Guerrero to punch through Berto's shoulder roll defense. Then watch Floyd. Two completely levels of SKILL. The philly shell can't be an automatic success for everyone. You gotta have great skill in order for it to work effectively. If you are skillful enough, sure, you can land a great shot on Floyd or break him down. But the reason why he's one of the best defensive fighters of all time is because he won't allow anyone to do that to him. And even if he gets caught he has good ability to recover quickly.

How do you know they haven't mastered the shoulder roll. I fought some of the best amateurs in the world. The OHR is the best move against counter punchers and you know it.

 

I think the OP means a looping overhand right. In which case, I kinda' agree with him. A lot of the rights I've seen that have been ineffective against the shoulder roll are ones that shoot too straight and bounce of the shoulder. They don't create any angles to creep through. Whereas a well-timed, looping right that goes over the shoulder and at least hits the top of the head or temple, would yield better results. Especially if it's accompanied by feints and jabs. Most important thing, though, is creating angles.

 

:blood Leonard had a devastating right hand.. but i would check out that fight it's really a good example.


personally i like the right hook to the body. stick the jab in their face and throw it wide, and theyll roll their shoulder back expecting a right hand hand up top, and theyll expose the side /or back of their liver.

beating the shoulder roll is just all about knowing where there gonna be. You know hes gonna twist his shoulder every time u throw a right hand, and you know how hes going to angle his body and where hes arms are gonna be, so u use feints , use your jab, set him up and fill in those gaps where you know hes gonna be exposed.

 

Ya that's right. I didn't clarify. I meant the looping OHR.. which in my opinion is extremely effective against the shoulder roll.

 

I know because if you beat someone who is a master of the shoulder roll defense you wouldn't be here posting and/or trolling. You'd be too busy training for a world title.
