Why don't fighters just throw the over hand right against the shoulder roll?

Alright, Oscar Troll La Hoya. You go chase your dreams. I'll be looking forward to seeing your PPV fights soon. Meanwhile I'm gonna sign up to become an NBA superstar. All I have to do is jump and put a ball in a bucket. Seems easy enough.

SRL beat it by throwing hard right hands directly under and behind Floyd Sr.'s left elbow. I'm always surprised more fighters don't do that. When they lean back, they lift that elbow up and SRL just went to work until it came back down, then resumed throwing over the top.

Gavin Reese landed some clean ones on broner.Overhand right is crucial against the shoulder roll.

It works for you because you fight guys imitating very good champions and getting hit because of it, one thing is landing it on average fighter whole another thing on great champions!!!

Yup. Also as above the right to the body also works. SRR just kept his distance and dug that right hand under the elbow.

I think Ray Leonard said if he had to fight Floyd that he wouldnt throw a straight right, he wouldnt even try to land on the chin but loop rights at the top of the head like the temple area

i cant remember what HBO fight Lampley or Merchant quoted this

seems like a sound strategy and its exactly how Mosley rocked floyds world in round 2

Most coaches won't ever call anything an orthodox fighter throws a "right hook". And if they did, they'd be referring to an overhand right.

In any case, you have to set it up with a feint. Marquez's most frequent punch against Floyd was a right hand over the top, and he landed it because he knew how to trigger Floyd's left hook counters. On the inside it's also a good punch to set up by being short with it (just watched Johnson-Cloud, full of those). If you just launch it or throw the same combination each time, eventually the other guy will catch on.

It can work but it often leaves you open to be hit cleanly.

a shoulder roll isn't necessarily static. chances are if that fighter is using a shoulder roll they are athletic enough to just duck a looping right hand. a shoulder roll is mainly used to block hooks and body shots anyways
