Fighters who made it the hard way: Pretty much every one of them, except Chavez Jr. OK, serious answer: I read that Martinez had it really rough for many years, until finally signing with a big promoter. That's why he was fairly old when he first gained international recognition.
One of the lowest points in sports history was when Hagler beat Minter. British fans throw beer bottles into the ring. What a bunch of assholes. Apparently Minter was the modern day equivalent of an EDL/KKK superstar
Martinez is a good call, Hagler too. Wouldn't agree with Broner, who got exposure on big undercards in his first few fights. A lot has been expected from him since he turned professional and he has got plenty of chances. I'm looking for fighters who nothing much was expected of them when they turned professional, and who got titles/recognition without the help of big promotion, much amateur success/experience etc.
