Can anyone tell me why this generation of talent is weaker then previous era when: 1. Boxing has expanded globally due to the worldwide broadcast of fights in the 80s/90s 2. Russian and Eastern European fighters can now turn pro 3. There are more registered HW boxers today than ever before 4. HW champions/contenders average much higher weights than ever before Why is this era weak? Or is it because the US no longer dominates HW boxing?
It's not just the lack of talent but the lack of excitement and general pussiness of most of the contenders, not to mention the horrible fragmented state of the sport caused by greedy and corrupt sanctioning bodies. When Klit fans have to resort to claiming that Wach, Mormeck and Pianeta are the best that are available then you know you're in dire straits.
If you go to any casual fan or person and ask them if they know Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson, they'll say yes. If you ask them about Wladimir Klitschko they won't know who he is at all.
I fail to see your point since if you asked any casual fan who Jerry Rice is they would have no clue but everybody knows OJ Simpson.
Hey, hey, they're super heavyweights, remember? We're living in the era of the super heavyweight. None of that in-shape nonsense.
The HW era is weak for a lot of reasons, but I think the primary one is because a lot of the better athletes have decided to pursue other sports like football due to popularity, safety, and money. Boxing used to be one of the most watched sports but it has been supplanted by others in popularity now, the money in other sports is better in general, and they are generally safer(though a case can be made that more serious injuries occur in football). There has also been a pretty clear erosion of skill and conditioning in the HW division, a lot of today's heavies simply don't stay in shape, nor do they try to improve their craft. It's a credit to the KBros that they always come in shape and prepared, but unfortunately(or fortunately) for them, their competition generally does not.
The thing about being a champion is that it's not enough to just be a good boxer, you also have to have the personality with it to attract the general public. The Klitschko's just don't have an exciting personality.
Nobody said they were the best, only that they were willing to sign for the fights. Fury, Helenius, Povetkin, Boytsov, Arreola, Wilder, Mitchell, etc. all have nothing but excuses, some legit since they're all younger fighters trying to get experience so they can give a serious challenge. There's a fair chance we'll see Wlad fight at least 3 of those guys in the next year/year and a half. Povetkin might as well cash out & when Vitali retires Arreola & Stiverne will likely fight for that strap setting up a big fight for unification against Wlad.
