I was watching Bradley vs Alexander today and in round 4 they discussed how Hearns showed Bradley how he throws his powerful right and Bradley was in awe of the power as well as the amount of torque created Emmanuel Steward went on to say trainers doing the padwork create bad habits by meeting the punches half way with the mitts and it doesnt allow fighters to get that torque i see lots of threads dedicated to fighters hitting the mitts on here, is there any truth to the statement about padwork
Well like you said, it's the trainer, not the mitts themselves. It's good to meet a fighter just a bit so they don't lunch to get impact and meet some resistance, but they have to get full extension. Just look at Alexander's awful mitt-work leading up to that fight, that's not how you throw punches in the ring. It was so bad that my friend thought it had to be a trick to lure Bradley in, and lost his vCash on it
You could easily hear a difference though. Technique is necessary to maximize your potential. [yt]g1GtrWw09eE[/yt]
I think Mitt work is better than bag work, your trainer keeps you honest when your doing mitts, the bag doesnt hit back a good trainer will pick off your lazy jab counter your lazy shot hit you when you drop your hands, your working on everything when you do mitts, your usually in the ring so your working on not just sharpening your shots and defense but also working on Ring awareness...
:deal And if he doesnt do that no need to hit the mitts thing is to counter if he sees huge openings and that way it helps with defence!
This. Plus when you're on the bag and you get tired you sometimes get lazy on the mitts you have no choice but to throw what the guy tells you.
Good point. In general trainers should focus on teaching fighters how to throw on the move IMO. If you train a fighter to just step into his 1-2's or stay in the same spot when throwing a combination, he's going to lunge in for his shots and lose control of range. Throwing while moving in and out & side to side is important because in the ring, you and your opponent are always going to be moving.
And it's an avenue for trainer's to help the boxer memorize the technique and movement when he's throwing a punch. Punching a bag will never show how well versed you punch, the mitts will.
Yes on both accounts, if you run out of gas in front of your trainer, you better get using them legs a good trainer will open up on you and test your defense. I always prefer mitts over bag work its easy to get bored on the bag and when you get bored you get lazy and when you get lazy you slack off.... Never do any bag work at home if your training, you have nobody there to correct the mistakes your developing. The mitts just allow you to learn so much more all at once its like sparring. You work on slipping shots picking off shots not just throwing shots, Blocking bobbing and weaving using your footwork, taking advantage of counter opportunities..... Pepper Roach would make us work until we nearly puked, there was only one time I did end up tossing my cookies in there, but I love that he pushes you to the limit...
My trainer used to slap me from behind even on bag when I put my left low after jab:yep good way to not forget even on bag
