Hopkins had plenty of amateur experience. He has made statements talking about all the trophies he used to have boxing in Philly... His record was something like 90-7, and was a 3 time national champion in prison.

When Roy fought him he was ranked higher by the IBF than Roy was, they were both young.. and after his loss to Roy would go on an ATG MW run, without losing another fight for a decade.. The fight was fought at a very high skill level.

At the time, that win didn't seem great, but looking back, you realize it was.

    Hard one to choose.

Roy at his peak was more talented but he does have a failed drug test to his name. Pac probably has more better overall wins in his career. Also got to take into account the last ten years of Roy's career.

To each their own, but getting beat by ATG fighters like Marquez isn't embarrassing, getting abused by Tarver and Glen Johnson (far from great fighters) in back to fights is pretty embarrassing, especially as Jones was nearer to his prime than Pacquiao

They are legit great wins ( Hopkins and Toney ), even moreso in hindsight with Hopkins. **** fight though. And Manny also has great wins.

I'd say Roy Jones slightly higher, just wish he would've proved it more.Whetehr that was his fault or not i dont know but Manny has clearly fought the better opposition.

Both great fighters at the end of the day.

And that's what happens when you take on the best fighters like Pacquiao did. If Pacquiao fought the likes of Telesco, Frazier, Kelly and Pazienza in his prime then he would have looked like superman, and been undefeated for years. Sven Ottke retired as undefeated champion, is he greater than both?

    Good point

    Roy Jones for me.

Both were great though, and fighters of their respective decades I believe.

I am just more impressed with Roy, starting at 154 and becoming a World Champion at HW, dropping back down and becoming a world Champion again at LHW... If not for the DQ loss to Griffin in a fight he was well on his way to winning, that would have put his record at 50-0 before losing...

World titles at MW-SMW-LHW-HW, also beating 2 of the other most respected fighters of his era.. Hopkins and Toney. His losses at age 34 do not erase this amazing feat.

I think history will be more kind to Roy as time goes on and he retires, it is easy to underrate how good when you watch him lose to people he would have wiped the floor with.

Don't worry, give Pac three more years and he'll be getting embarrassed too. Maybe not even three

Ability wise it's Roy by a landslide but legacy wise, Pac has to be ranked higher because he achieved more in his career.

    Pacquiao.

While Jones is a H2H beast with some great wins they are few and far between, on average Pacquiao fought a much higher level of competition.

Out of interest, I wonder how many people who voted for Jones in this one voted for Morales in the thread between him and Mayweather? Considering he had the stand out wins on his resume too but no where near as deep.

The first Tarver loss hurts Jones' legacy I think.. I would easily have him top 15 had he retired at 49-1 after defeating Tarver.

Roy was slipping fast when Tarver knocked him out, but he was still an elite fighter, and P4P #1. Everything after that I don't really hold agasint Roy, as it was clear he was no longer the great fighter that reigned for over a decade.. The knockout loss was too big of an obsticle for a fighter like Roy to overcome at that age.
