"a pretty much physically shot Fenech?"

See, this is what I get for stopping in every so often at work, and missing context of longer discussions I don't bother to read.

    If that's the case here(?)

Yeah in the first fight I'm saying :good My

'the second fight' opening was a riposte to McGrain's fair assertion that Nelson had beat seven shades of shizen out of Fenech in the rematch.

The 2nd never made it to the 12th of course :D

I don't think Nelson gets the Joe Louis treatment here. It isn't that henmade great adjustments in his rematches but that he pissed around beforehand. Less so with Fenech, ****ed hands and degrading chin aside he was a beast in the first fight and looked to repeat it 2nd time round, overcoming a shaky start to back Nelson up again, but Nelson found punches he didn't first time round and smashed Jeff to bits.

His best win IMO. Gomez away? Yeah, fair enough. But I was never impressed much with Bazooka post-Sanchez. Obviously he was still incredible offensively as he showed against Pintor, but not built for much higher and not the great fighter he was when Sal' smashed him. Fenech wasn't either, but he seemed a horrible matchup for Azumah after the first fight. A sweet accomplishment for sure.

I wouldn't put Nelson up in the top tier of the featherweights, but I do think he's absolute hell on anyone who wants to stand and fight. Gomez, Villasana, Martinez........then later he learned how to change his style a bit, perhaps acquiescing the advances of age. Takes a special fighter to be able to do that. The win over Ruelas is a good example of the trap-setter he became.

    He has almost everything.

Great on film, a huge number of title fight wins, some nice wins past-prime a very solid resume only the lack of longevity hurts, but in his own weird arch, it's actually not that bad. Directly comparable to Saldivar for me.

I think he was bloody skilled. In fact I've always said he's a jack of all trades and master of none, a great all rounder, and McGrain thought so too.

I'm just not...blown away I guess. As I've said already, he and McCallum are comparable and I'm much more impressed by McCallum.

Hey, as much as I'm arguing certain places, I cannot have any gripes with the list. All solidly backed up, a lot of the same names I had, a few of my favourites made it, and it's brilliantly written up.

Another epic to add to your canon McGrain.

Harold Johnson is next. I have faith in you McGrain. You will do a perfect profile, even if there is no room in this world for perfection.

I think Nelson had much better longevity than saldivar, but a fair bit less impressive prime wins.

I can't wait for the Sam Langford one. I don't have him number one but I know it's going to be so epic, it'll shake my faith. (In my own list, that is.)
