Thats because Gatti wouldn't fight him straight up. Tzyu would have fought him even if he wasn't his mandatory I believe.

Im going by memory I can't say I have every single detail. From my memory, Mayweather had to chase after Gatti a little bit who was one of the few options he had given the circumstances at the time. The top rated guys Tzyu, Gatti, Harris, Cotto, Hatton, Mitchell.

Cool, was just asking. I'm pretty sure gatti wanted to milk his title reign some. He had a minor career resurgence, wasn't the 140 World Champ. So I don't hold mere titleholders to the same standards as the recognized world champs. Titleholders are nothing more then contenders in my eye.

    Tszyu wanted Gatti

"Actually this is the best fight for me and I think for the fans and the division, also," Tszyu said of a unification fight with the WBC champion. "I personally think a fight with Gatti would be sensational. It would be very exciting for me, for Gatti and for the fans who would get to see two fighters who punch and come to fight hard. No-one would relax for a minute."

"I would love to fight Kostya Tszyu,” Mayweather said. “If the money's right, I'll go to Russia to fight him. I just want to show I'm the best. But with HBO and Showtime, I know it's going to be hard to make the fight."

"Again, like Gatti, Mayweather is with HBO and I am with Showtime. The possibility of a fight... very slight." - Tszyu

"I think the WBC is going to be best for me in the beginning, Arturo Gatti is the big attraction. I have to speak to the WBC because I am emeritus champion and they said to me when they gave me this honour that I'm able to fight the champion any time I want. I want to fight him now." - Tszyu

"You gotta remember that he got that belt because they stripped Kostya Tszyu of the belt and let him (Gatti) fight for a vacant title. I don't feel like my job is complete until I beat Kostya Tszyu. " - Mayweather

"Like I said at my last fight when I called Kostya Tszyu out. I called him out. Kostya Tszyu don't never call my name out. Every time they ask about my name, he try to duck and dodge the question and go around my name." - Mayweather

Call outs means jack in boxing. Anyone, and everyone, does that. This isn't pro wrestling where a call out puts you in the ring the next week.
