It really annoys me how not a single one of my friends at university can name 5 current boxers, let alone know the names of some of the greats who have graced the sport. I know thats obviously not an empirical way to determine boxings popularity (may even be an indication of my ignorant friends) but that does appear to be the general trend. Why is boxing not as popular as cricket or even tennis, when arguably its much more exciting.
Because your friends like the majority of the population are dorks who rather watch fictionalized violence in movies than real violence
- The best fighters are usually on premium channels (HBO, Showtime) - There are so many belts they don't know who is a real champ
I think they just don't know about it. They don't think it's important or relevant as it's not advertised well, the biggest events are not on cable TV, and since as a result they don't find a way into the sport, they never realize how interesting and exciting it is. I try to make as many converts as I can. On the right night, it's doable.
I have freieds who watch boxing. Not many but enough. I cant stand **** opinions from casuals anyway, get enough of that **** on here...
Corrupt decisions turn off a LOT of my friends. To most people, boxing is not a sport, but a punchline.
Mate, not even met a single person with similar intrest in boxing, even the guys at my uni boxing club didnt have a clue about whats happening in the sport currently, There simply isnt enough boxing fans out there !
University types can't stomach a good boxing match, he's right, get some new friends no offence to your uni buddies but if you wanna watch a fight they arent the crowd to do it with
I'm not itching for it to be on par with baseball or basketball in the US, but it would be nice if I weren't the only one around aside from a handful of friends that would go check out a fight at a bar or order it. If it got too popular then fandom becomes superficial and I can live without the newb conversations about how Trinidad would have destroyed Tyson and ****. Promotion is the biggest thing. Running clips of famous fighters with some back-story that gives a narrative the audience can dig, more attention from ESPN and such, stuff like that.
