That would help and is one of the changes that is actually plausible. Boxing announcers tend to be so negative, as is the culture around the sport in general. The general approach seems to be to compare a guy to his absolute ceiling and then detail the ways he falls short of it, where in any other sport they talk about how great the top level guys are. NFL announcers don't call a 49ers game and talk about nothing other than how CK is not as good as John Elway, they emphasize all of the incredible things he CAN do. UFC is the same way. They'll go on and on about all of the incredible things their athletes can do and have done. I imagine if you went on an NBA forum and said Marc Gasol or Chris Bosh was a terrible player, you'd be laughed off the board. Come on here and say Robert Guerrero or Amir Khan is a bum and half the posters will agree with you. Not a good look in a culture where hype is so important.
Excellent point. This is why I hate posters that tear fighters down. It's such a long way up to the top, making it even half way makes you extraordinary. On my original point about marketing, take tonight's fight. If I had any of my non-boxing friends watching that fight with me, they likely would have been so excited. You can't not get sucked into the drama. There were two turkish girls who lived in the apartment below me last year in college. When they first saw a match with me, they watched Linares-DeMarco, and watched as DeMarco pummeled a bleeding Linares. "It's not fair, he's bleeding" they said. I was like, is it unfair to score points in a basketball game? They couldn't fathom why I would enjoy watching it or how it was sophisticated competition. Months later they're watching 24/7 and scoring Pacquiao-Marquez 3 with me. Not sure about "on the regular", but all of those factors existed throughout the 20th century when boxing was considered a mainstream sport. The days of Joe Louis, Robinson, Ali, Leonard, Tyson, saw massive mainstream exposure to boxing. Now the average person living in the US doesn't know who Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao even are. It's not the content, it's the (lack of) access and exposure.
Too many belts, lack of coverage, competition with other main stream sports. People dont compete in sports like they used to in the past. I can understand the frustration boxing fans must feel when the fights they want to happen never do and too many fighters pad their records. Those points dont bring in fans.

17 Weight divisions, some separated by as little as 3lbs. 3 or 4 belts per division. No logic at all when it comes to who fights who. Many, many Corrupt decisions/fixed fights. PPV Bottom line is boxing is not a sport, it is just a $$$$ driven sport entertainment machine like WWF
I have to push back a bit on the bad decisions and multiple championship belt issues. Yes, they are significant problems, but they are internal. I don't believe they're actually stopping casual sports fans from tuning in. If a bunch of casuals stepped into a bar and witnessed tonight's fight, I don't think they'd give a **** if Pacquiao and Mayweather never fought each other or there were 5 new alphabet sanctioning bodies. They'd be drawn in by the magic of boxing. Even with all its flaws, boxing has the goods, people just need to let people know what they're missing.
If you can get them into a fight like Rios/Alvarado, or the fights tonight, they'll like it. The problem is the negativity from the commentators in every fight. There's no other sport where you can watch and have people on TV talking **** on the sport, the fighters, the refs, the judges, the promoters, the commissions, etc. all night long. Plus the ridiculous prices to watch the best fights. Plus the inaccessibility of amateur boxing (very few kids have a chance to ever box...it's not regarded as a normal part of childhood like playing football, basketball, baseball, etc.) People don't relate to it or understand it like they do other sports which they've been raised around. Lack of coverage from major networks, channels (ESPN), and publications. You will not find boxing results in the newspapers very often either. Same with sports magazines. Plus the fact that boxing is an art. You have to be trained in it to truly understand/appreciate what's going on. It's kind of like how everyone can appreciate an awesome knockout, soccer goal, touchdown pass, basketball dunk, etc., but only people who have played the sport or analyze it frequently can appreciate the subtleties of the buildup to it.
