Why is boxing not a popular sport to watch?

It's too hard and expensive to watch. It's tv exposure is really fragmented. Here in England boxing's split between Sky, boxnation, primetime, occaisional loaded tv or channel 5 shows, all except channel 5 are subscription, and tickets to watch it live are too high for anyone who isn't a fan already to consider going just because boxings in town and it might be fun. I went last weekend to see local fighters and it was £35 in a civic centre, that's like an armoury show to American fans.

 

The popularity of someone like ****** Beiber demonstrates that the vast majority of people are idiots. If its not mainstream and hyped by the media people dont care about it.

Example of how dumb, ignorant and easily led people are: 90% of my friends dont give a **** about tennis yet when wimbledon rolls around everyone is updating their facebook status to 'come on murray'. They dont really care about tennis but the media has hyped up Murray in England and so its 'cool' to support him.

how many sports aren't governed by one federation and so fighters and promoters can make up their own 'incentives' prior to a bout that in any other sport would be scandalous and corrupt?

hell, even on here people throw around the term 'world champion' when it's not even close to being legit


so how are casual fans suppose to get behind boxing when even the people involved in the sport mislead and dupe them?

 

Much of boxing has become as silly as wrestling. I am not thinking of the fights but of many aspects which surround the sport. For instance, virtually all boxers now have nicknames and they are mentioned in every article. Many trainers, cut men, etc., have become "legendary". Fighters now seem to be "enemies" of their opponents-nose to nose, saying that "he wont give me a problem", etc. Announcers didn't simply tell you what you just saw-they analyzed what was going on. SHO is particularly bad about this. SHO announcers yell, get way too excited.

It didn't use to be like this. Fighters were respectful of their opponents, promoters and others weren't in the ring before and after the fights attempting to be seen on television.

The fights are still good, but the surroundings have become cheap and full of needless trivia.

 

I think boxing is once again becoming the hot topic. People are beginning to talk about it more where I work and friends I hang around with. The interesting thing even when boxing was supposedly dyingatsch it kept on setting records on PPV and viewers on SHO and HBO

 

Today's youth generation are more interested in ****** Bieber, Kanye West etc... then fighting sports.

I think as well, there's not enough fights for the mainstream to watch. At least with European football you have several matches a week. Whereas with boxing you're lucky to get one big fight. There needs to be an improvement in quality and quantity.

Peoples dads don't watch boxing with them to know about boxing
They haven't trained in it
Growing up all the kids in my school liked football so that is it for us
Not enough exposure on channels 1-5
Mums wouldn't want their kids to compete in it
Parents think that it may make them violent

 

Dude every year is the same story over and over. You must not have been following the sport for too long....

I will stop your quote right here. Back then it was immensely popular. People were still also living like ****ing barbarians too. Great Depression, world war, organized crime, and all. Gtfo, dude boxing is not mainstream anymore. People want to follow their favorite chump sports team where their favorite player can have off nights and still continue to play for 10+ years (with no fear of failing). You have an off night in boxing? You get clipped and traumatized, never the same again. Like I already said, people just cannot handle that.

 

And they probably should not either. Its a brutal game, I would rather my kids played footbal,basketball, soccer etc. People box because they have to, and will never really have a chance to be the next Nobel Prize winner for some scientific discovery. Last time I checked, all the nerds were not from inner city Philadelphia. They are modern time gladiators, prize fighters for the cash.

 

Uni kids are usually clueless about individual sports.
