Is Gary Cornish the next Scott Belshaw/Tom Dallas?

Yeah I agree he doesn't look that good at all, however he is only 25 (very young for a HW today) so he could try to use this as a learning experience and develop in the future. Good luck to him.

 

Maloney loves the hype.
I was reading a bunch of old Boxing News magazines the other week and Frank Maloney (with brother Eugene) were doing a PPV show via the internet and were talking about potential record breaking global audiences (for a domestic fight) in the millions. The following weeks issue and it was reported that they lost thousands on that show.

 

Yeah nothing special. At least he's getting in the ring and fighting though unlike the TS.

 

I was speaking to Gary a few months ago, said he only had 9 amateur fights. He's needs to increase the quality of his opponents steadily over his next 10 fights and then get some hype. Simple as that he isn't ready yet.

 

I can't comment on his current displays but what i have seen he's in decent nick despite being part time. He's mobile and actually seems quite relaxed in the ring but then again maybe that's the level of opposition?.

He's got a lot of bad habits, Doesn't utilize the jab a little like David Price early pro career where the jab was a mere flick. His jabs lazy, He tries to use it at times but it's not powerful enough.

The lack of AM fights i think can only hold weight for so long (not directed at you Iceferg). What he's lacking is quality sparring on a regular basis. He needs quality work, Needs a step up in opposition (Area/National level), Fighting the level he currently is for me isn't going to develop anything bar a padded record and more ££ in bank balance.

Lot of work but TBH when i compare him and Dallas when Tom was unbeaten and by some was touted for domestic honors i think Cornish shows more promise because he looks more natural and athletic in the ring and also i think he's being held back hoping Chisora/Price/Fury leave domestic scene in next 8 months and leave the domestic scene bare of any real quality.

 

He wont be british title level for at least a few years, technique is still not great, but regular, good, varied sparring aint easy up in the highlands

 

Yeah i know he's headed down south a few times for it but even down here it's tough to get the best sparring at HW, What he needs to do is what Fury and Price have and go abroad and get it. Obviously he lacks the backing and doing his job on side doesn't help but sometimes go to speculate to accumulate and it's invaluable experience.

The British title is going to be a mad rush when the main men walk onto world scene.

Why has Cornish been rushed to turn pro so early in his career? Only 9 amatuer fights, why not stay amatuer for a few years?

 

Can only think he wanted to make a few quid, Didn't enjoy AM's or felt he'd develop better as a pro.

Strange career thus far. Trying to think of a domestic break out fight for him.

 

Pointless, nigh on impossible to get regular fights here at shw and very small pool at that weight, really difficult to get matched.

 

Paul Butlin IMO would be a worth while step up. A guy who's competitive in his fights and won his last two.

Gary's hardly fought British Opposition . But i think that's a decent start then come through that fight and then fight Darch or Howe. Mix at that level till start of 2014 and then maybe get a guy from Commonwealth over.

Then Dallas vs Cornish this time next year as Goodwin develops him. International Masters Heavyweight title on whatever channel Goodwin has his fights on. IMO that's 12 or so months spent building slightly, Still not going overboard like how i feel Eubank Jnr should be kept at area level for time being while he iron's out technical faults. Gary can develop there, be kept honest. Competitive fights with guys who come to win. Then step him up to a title fight next year, Bit of exposure and interest and a win then sets ball rolling for back end of next year.

Won't happen though IMO.

 

Ive always thought the hype for Cornish has been over the top, but it seems to work, hes selling shows and that and has a fan base. So why not?

A wee bit of trivia I was in his opponents corner in his first ever amatuer fight, if I remember correctly, was the Novice Champs in Cardenden about 5 year ago now.

 

Gary is a really nice guy and has all the attributes to carve out a good career at British level and maybe more depending on how he improves and how much he wants to learn. I'm sure with Maloney taking an interest in him he will get the chance to get sparring with his stable of fighters.

They could do well in getting him a fight with Matt Skelton, I thought Friday night he really looked his age and also maybe showing signs that he might have just reached the end of his career. He isn't a massive puncher and seems to have lost the desire for the all action style that was his trademark.

As for him boxing Simmons, I think Stevie would take the bout just to get in the ring and he boxed at heavyweight in the amateurs for years. Gary would have the size advantage but Stevie would have a big advantage in experience. I'd pay to see that fight but I doubt it will ever happen.
