Yea. But people who couldn't handle it would refuse to fight in Japan. People who found that it benefited their abilities(like Mousasi who would be able to up kick people who tried to grapple **** him) would only agree to fight their best opponents in Japan. I'm fine with it, but I doubt the UFC would be.

Sure it is. People refuse to take fights all the time. Sometimes DW comes down hard on them, sometimes he doesn't say a word. Depends on how much money they make him, vs how much they cost him by denying a fight. They need to just move to a 4 sided ring with a bottom limiter so they don't slide out of the bottom ropes. Won't happen though.

 

Combining someone as physically strong as GSP with someone who knows how to technical enforce that strength like GSP leads to a tough 5 rounds. Diaz had absolutely nothing for GSP. His boxing is sloppy but enforces it through tough man antics. In MMA, I expect him to usually get away with it in MMA but be punished in boxing where a tough man approach won't make a boxer cower. I did expect more of a threat from Nicks Jits. I didn't think GSP would be able to do so much damage without the fear of a submission. I thought it would be slightly more boring as he'd control him more.

 

Perhaps people need to re-assess how "good", Diaz's boxing is.

Basically he doesn't possess an uppercut(why FFS???), so GSP had nothing to fear with going for a takedown.

Interesting that GSP looked less roided up for this fight, then he was for the Condit fight.

Also, with Diaz shunning weight training, is it any wonder he has poor take down defence, because he is like a rubber man.

Not sure if there is anything to Diaz's funny comment about lacking motivation or not, but he doesn't appear to have much to offer against a strong wrestler and once again, there was no evidence that his cardio was better than his opponent.

 

It'd be great if he actually did something, but he just lays and prays and burns out the clock.

 

Yeah and then doesn't strike or go for a sub from these superior position, gsp is a great fighter but he is not exciting to watch he does what he needs to do to win and thats the sport but it doesn't mean he is entertaining.

 

thats what i took away from yesterday.. i mean hes a gracie barra black belt so it should be no surprise but it was obvious early on that gsp's jiu jitsu had been seriously overlooked. i was genuinely shocked at how well he controlled diaz who is a known positional escape artist..

He did the best he could with what Diaz gave him. He'd roll under and was pinning the opposite side wrist. There's no way for Diaz to attack from there (well, there's the leg attacks but as Diaz said, GSP saw that coming every time) but it also limited the power that GSP could put into his punches. So he took what was available; total control with no risk for weaker punches with no leverage. When Diaz wasn't in that position and GSP was in his guard, GSP landed with some good elbows. If Diaz had stayed on his back and gone for a greater variety of subs, he'd have been open to harder GNP. It takes two folks....
