Confirmation - St Pierre has the most technically sound top game in world MMA

Well, there's nothing to do to a wrestler when all they do is improve position but don't try to finish.

At one point in history, Georges used to go for submission attempts from the top. But he doesn't, didn't. His GNP was there, but nothing that was serious enough to put Diaz in any real danger.

What this fight should do for a lot of people is make them realize, he wrestler, regardless of how talented or gifted the BJJ guy is, has the advantage unless he tries additional offense from the dominant position.

Top CONTROL > Everything else in MMA. Not saying it was boring, but it cements what Diaz was saying the whole time about control vs. trying to fight. GSP used takedowns to control the fight, not to take it to a place where he thought he could finish. If he thought he could finish on the bottom I expect he would have tried more gnp, or tried to submit. Good win, he won a match against Diaz, still waiting for the fight to happen.

 

PRIDE > Effort to finish the fight. Whilst it was a joy to watch GSP tool Diaz with his wrestling, GSP from 04-06 would have torn through Diaz and stopped him. Back then he used his great wrestling to stop fighters. Now he's just content to control them with his top game.

 

Not sure he would have stopped him for sure, but it probably would have looked similar to five rounds of GSP/Mayhem.

JJ people, if GSP's BJJ is "way underrated" he would have submitted someone since Matt Hughes.

Yeah, there is more to BJJ than submissions.

 

Just who did St Pierre finish from guard from 04-06 worthy of a mention?, he's never had fight ending GnP, he's never looked to finish fights from the top unless there has been a glaringly obvious chance to do so (Serra).

Against a submission wizard like Diaz - it was smart to stay away from any submission attempts. He fought the smartest fight possible. The minute he would have tried to put in his hook or try to grab an arm - Diaz would have been able to reverse him. GSP fought the smartest fight possible to ensure that he never has to get in the ring with Nick Diaz again.

I don't get all the critics for this fight

GSP went for at least 1 sub in the Diaz fight, saw immediately that Diaz wanted to reverse/do something that I don't understand and he went back to the top control. If my memory is correct I think I've heard many time plenty of BJJ guy that said position before sumbmission.

I don't understand why people are complaining, GSP fight against Diaz was ****in brillant, the first 2 round when he jump from 1 side to the other to keep the top control was ****in amazing.

One of the best GSP performance in a ****in while...

In fact 2 epic performance against top competition and he dominated almost every second in those 2 fight(minus the Condit kick)

Maybe some people expect more action than this in a mma fight, i always liked the yellow cards in pride as it encouraged people to fight and to go for a finish.

 

PRIDE is gone mate, the format of the sport is different, when is this going to sink in, its like saying I used to like 30 round or 50 round fights back in Jack Johnsons day, todays 12 or 10 rounders stink!

In BJJ tournaments you get points for positioning, you get points for control! why on earth should you be penalised for gaining top control and maintaining position in an MMA fight? I agree if the top position is doing absolutly nothing then yes, but 9 times out of 10 (unless severe fatiuge has set in) the guy on top is working because if he doesnt he knows he's getting his ass stood up or potentially submitted.

Its then up to the guy on the bottom to reverse what just happened, sweep then stand or equiavalent
