I always thought Hennessy did things the right way British, Commonwealth, European and then World titles and about 4 or 5 years ago he had a decent stable of fighters with Froch, Barker, John Murray etc. He had a deal with Sky and then got a deal with ITV and I thought he promoted some decent shows. It was when the Froch v Taylor fight wasn't live on TV that things began to turn sour for him but why was that? Was it greed and the money he demanded for the TV rights or is he not a very nice person to deal with? I heard rumours that Sky wanted Froch v Pascal as the British leg of the Hatton v Malignaggi PPV but Hennessy said no and Sky haven't dealt with him since.
It probably came down to money, the thing with Hennessy is a lot of people feel slightly cheated in that he had Froch for so long and did so little with him. From the Pascal fight onward, Froch hasn't really been in a bad fight and had he been given the platform and exposure he could be such a bigger star than he is. The Taylor fight not even being on Primetime was a disgrace, that was one of the most dramatic world title fights that involved a British fighter in years. I think Hennessy thought Froch would lose and thought he was cashing out, watching that on some crappy stream still bothers me now!
Because he's so inept. He's had so many great fighters in his stable over the years and done so little with them. He got himself a deal with terrestrial TV which other promoters would kill for and completely wasted it. His shows look poorly put together and are never advertised. His fighters all leave him because he can't get them any exposure. Mick's just a very poor promoter overall.
I think he did a good job with boxers careers to a point, taking them from amateurs up to contender status but never seemed to have the clout to work with the big boys.
Because he's a easy target. Fat bloke who's doesn't care to much about looks and does things his own way. He doesn't engage the fans like Eddie does and doesn't have the large amounts of fighters other Promoters have had. He's done some good things and some bad but for me i like Mick i think he's a genuine fan and likes to do things the right way. He's delivered title fights for his boys on home turf in past. Takes his time to do it but when he has he's come through for the boys he's had.
I like Hennessy but with ITV and Channel 5, he had two big opportunities for British boxing, and he messed both up because his shows are full of mismatches. All he had to do was put on good, competitive cards and everyone would praise him but, sadly, all his shows were very poorly promoted and he lost his TV deals for a reason. Hennessy seems to be one of those people who gets complacent when things are easy. When he was without a TV deal, he worked hard and managed to get the perfect deal on two occasions, once with ITV and then 5. That's brilliant, however, when he got those deals, he failed at getting press attention and he failed to put on good shows. It's a shame because you can guarantee he worked hard to get those TV deals in the first place, but he didn't deliver. As a fan, I didn't enjoy his shows because they were too one sided. I'd like to see Hennessy recover and get another TV deal though...this time, it'll probably be on BBC One at prime time
I have always been a fan of Mick Hennessey people out him down and dismiss him but there is definitely a case for him being the 2nd best promoter in British boxing. He had Froch gave him exposure on itv and brought him into the super 6. Barker and Murray he brought to the verge of world title shots before they were cherry picked by other promoters. He brought boxing back to terrestrial and has brought Tyson Fury to the public consciousness He has been frozen out by Sky and this has been his downfall I think if we had Mick on Sky we would have had Barker Murray and Froch fighting for world titles. Remember he brought Bradley over for Witter too. Highly underrated promoter.
I'm a huge Froch fan and put a large percentage of the blame for Froch's lack of profile (until him signing with Eddie) firmly in Fat Mick's court.
I think it's the inconsistency that bothers people, I don't hate MH at all but I did get frustrated at his promoting at times. Froch wins the title live on ITV in a barnstormer against Pascal, then his first defence isn't even shown at all despite being against a big name in America? We've gone from ITV, to nothing, to Channel 5 etc. Plus he also makes some odd choices in terms of where he stages his fights, we're constantly reminded that "boxing is show business" yet we have some of our biggest fighters like Fury and Degale fighting in leisure centres in Hull. Perhaps MH needed to do that to make the money work but it's not really what people want to see, particularly when you have Matchroom now putting on the highly polished type of show that we're more used to seeing in Germany and the USA.
