To be fair Micks channel 5 cards have been getting some good numbers and keeping boxing in the public eye, lots of people have heard about Tyson Fury, he screwed up with Froch though.
I believe the sky promotional machine and the fact he was mixing it up with world class opponents had a lot to do with that. No one really gave a **** abnoiut froch, was hardly micks fault.
You'd think he was frank Maloney the way yuous go on. Degales last fight was reasonable enough, eubanks been brought on at a steady decent pace, degales last fight was with a fringe contender, he didn't look great in his fight before that so I don't k ow whjo youj were expecting. No chance anyone would have heard of Galahad had he not been on 5, it got decent enough ratings etc. I hope the Cunningham fight manages talk get a slot and Fury makes it an exciting fight.
Why did Froch vs Inkin (pulled out) & Witter vs Bradley world title fights get put on ITV when Hennesey was still in contract with Sky? Why were Froch vs Taylor and Froch vs Dirrell not live on ITV when Mick had a deal them? If you are a TV company why would you deal with a Promoter who takes his fighters elsewhere once they get a big fight!
What he should have done is have a contract which stated a minimum fee for world title defences in the US. His ITV shows were horrific. Who can forget Angel McEnzie the polish girl from Big Brother live on ITV4! Outside of Froch has he ever promoted a fight in an arena?
True. The rest got about between 1m - 1.5m. Those are decent numbers but not amazing. Fury vs Chisora I think got about 3m. I think the Channel 5 execs saw that and thought all shows would get numbers that high because they don't understand boxing very well.
23/07/2011 Chisora-Fury - 2,220,000 (Channel 5 #1) 17/09/2011 Fury-Firtha - 1,030,000 (Channel 5 #24) 12/11/2011 Fury-Pajkic - 1,736,000 (Channel 5 #6) 18/12/2012 Galahad-Booth - 1,150,000 (Channel 5 #21) 14/04/2012 Fury-Rogan - 1,333,000 (Channel 5 #10) 18/05/2012 Galahad-Wale - 880,000 (Channel 5 #25) 07/07/2013 Fury-Maddelone - 1,005,000 (Channel 5 #21) 01/12/2012 Fury-Johnson - 1,370,000 (Channel 5 #6) 08/12/2012 DeGale-Zuniga - 970,000 (Channel 5 #22)
I can see where you're coming from with this argument, but on the other hand, surely Hennessy should have made sure people knew about it? Newspapers and TV stations aren't going to cover a fight unless you have things like press conferences and open days to get their attention. Mick has always been very lax in this department. I said in another thread that there was a Fury fight recently (I think against Maddalone) which I didn't know about until a couple of days before the event, and I'm on boxing news websites every single day. I think you're right to say that the coverage from Sky helped a lot but at the same time, Hennessy should have done more to attract media coverage when he had Froch. I made a comment in this thread that I think Hennessy gets complacent and doesn't think he needs to try and attract press because his shows are on national TV and will get big numbers anyway. This is true to an extent but if he'd done more to attract attention, I think all of his fighters would be bigger than they are today.
Hennessy's got to take some flack here for Channel 5 pulling out. Most of the cards haven't been good enough. Coming off all the momentum of Fury vs Chisora, he next put Tyson in with two bums in fights that meant largely nothing ( and one of those fights cut off and fans missed the f*cking thing by the way). Then he put him in with Martin Rogan whose never been anything other than a glorified local hardman. Again, the fight ultimately meaningless. Then ANOTHER fat guy in Maddelone who no one cared about. Johnson was Fury's first meaningful in 18 months really and by then loads of casual fans had switched off and cared more about the mad stuff Fury put on his twitter than they did about watching him fight. He needed to build on the success of the Chisora fight and he didn't, it's only now he's taking Tyson's career forward but it's likely too late to salvage any TV deal, the execs have seemingly lost interest
My point was froch had already gained some momentum and was easily marketable. He'd just come 2nd in the super six. I'm not saying he's blameless, just that people are quick to judge him when it comes to froch. At least he both him the title. Those ratings aren't too bad at all, I'd guess boxing's expensive though.
