I am what you would call a casual fan of MMA. Have watched a couple of UFC fights but never got into it. Know the names of a few of the bigger name fighters. I am living in Vegas right now. I see UFC advertising, MMA stores and tapout T shirts everywhere. The UFC PPV's get more exposure on ESPN than the big boxing shows, and UFC has more of a presence on national TV. I see UFC fighters in TV adverts but no boxers. So tell me about the sport and answer me some of the questions or let me know if my observations are correct. 1. What else is there outside of the UFC, can the other organisations compete in any way in the US, UK and the rest of the world. 2. I looked at the Sherdog rankings and it looks like 90% of ranked top 10 fighters are fighter in or have been beaten by somebody in the UFC. So are there any elite fighters in the UFC? 3. It seems like the best 2 fighters right now are George St.Piere & Anderson Silva. It seems there not the most exciting fighters, kind of like a Mayweather of MMA in terms of style, and nobody can come close to them? 4. What mega fights could be made on MMA right now? 5. Have any mega fights been missed out on? 6. Tell me about Fedor? Why did he never fight in the UFC? 7. Attendenes seem to be high at all UFC events. How are they for other MMA shows? 8. How do PPV figures compare to Boxing? 9. What are the negative effects of having one dominant promotional company? 10. What are the posative effects of having one dominant promotional company? 11. What are the pro's of boxing compared to MMA and Vice Versa? 12. How did the UFC in paticular get so popular and seemingly overtake Boxing in the eyes of younger sports fans. Thanks to anyone who gets involved in this discussion and answers the questions.

I have not got time to answer 11 questions, but surely this thread is about comparing the dominance of one promotional company in a sport with having multiple promoters. This was the point I made last week in the give absolute control to Eddie thread.
As explained in the thread by several people, Hearn would only have control of the sport in one country and boxing is a new sport so it would be impossible to replicate the model. The UFC are promoter and sanctioning body all rolled into one. Thats part of what the thread is about of course but its about allot of other things as well.
Fair enough, I'll try to answer as many of your questions as I can, considering you didn't type your first post out like an absolute bollock. Bellator is the only thing that comes to mind, maybe oneFC which I don't know much about. The UFC bought out PRIDE and Strikeforce. PRIDE pretty much destroyed itself with Yakuza activity being discovered, and Strikeforce probably had issues with their TV deal on Showtime or they decided they weren't that interested in the MMA game and took the deal. I'm not sure, Strikeforce always seemed to have a pretty good roster but didn't do anything unique. It was always a UFC feeder league to me. Plenty. Anderson Silva and GSP are two of the longest running and elite fighters. Their records are sometimes deceiving because there's just so many ways to lose a fight in MMA, compared with the fact that they're actually forced to fight stiff competition, especially if they move into the UFC. A loss in MMA is pretty much unescapable, in some form. Even one of the top fighters in the world, Jon Jones has a loss due to a DQ. Fedor Emelianenko, considered as the best MMA heavyweight of all time had a loss even in his prime, which was a cut. Anderson Silva is truly an outstanding MMA fighter. He's great on the ground, exceptional on the feet (especially at his advanced age, his reflexes haven't slowed a bit, it seems) whereas Georges who is also great on the ground and feet, follows more of a wrestling approach rather than striking like Anderson. Georges can be said to be quite a boring fighter, especially since his loss to Matt Serra which seemed to **** him up mentally, but Anderson is only in boring fights when he feels like taunting his opponent and dancing around. Sometimes he gasses too, but the fight is usually over too soon to find out msot of the time. GSP-Silva, and Silva-Jones are the two biggest ones. Basically, mix any of the current UFC champions and former dominant champions together and it can be considered a superfight. The one that comes to mind is Fedor vs. Brock Lesnar. Also Fedor vs. Overeem, which didn't come off when Alistair Overeem decided to move to the UFC. Fedor's promotional company, M-1 I believe were notoriously selfish assholes. From what I understand, they wanted to co-promote with the UFC, considering Fedor as on equal playing field as the UFC promotion itself. Dana didn't like that. Despite his criticism of Fedor, I believe he did everything possible to get Fedor in the UFC. Even recently, he stated he tried to make the superfight between Brock and Fedor, and he was so close to getting Fedor in the UFC until I believe, his father died. UFC buys generally do reasonably well, especially considering the PPV's now mean more with their Fox, FX and Fuel events mainly handling the lesser fights, leaving the PPV's for the champions and the big stars. They've never reached the heights they have when they had Brock Lesnar on their roster (he drew over a million numerous times, he's a ****ing beast of a PPV star), but the buys people like GSP, Anderson, Jones and even Ronda Rousey get is nothing to be sniffed at. There's no second promotion for talent, basically. If you look at a guy like Paul Daley, who left the UFC on bad terms. He fights absolute cans, there's rarely a guy on the circuit who's just as good as him but not in the UFC, and those fights are harder to make because they usually sign exclusive contracts to a number of what I consider 'indy' MMA promotions, like TITAN or Bellator. UFC call all the shots basically, and having a hot-headed promoter like Dana White can rub a lot of people and fighters the wrong way. The fights get made a lot easier than they do in boxing, fighters aren't getting paid waaaay too much and think they deserve lion shares or splits. They make the big fights, they promote it all, and unlike a company like WWE, they actually do well when they run a monopoly. But still, competition will always breed more exciting fights, that's just how it is. Look at Eddie Hearn in boxing, having such a number of guys in his stable is great when you've got the TV/PPV deals. There's just a danger of in-house promoting, like Bob Arum when you look at his stable. Not so much in the UFC when everybody elite is in the same house. They're known to give a plethora of guys a second chance too. Sometimes they can seem quite bias to fighters, but if they can win the fights and look impressive outside of UFC, they'll take 'em. It's not just from Boxing that the UFC derives from, it heavily derives from the Pro Wrestling market too. Kids who used to watch the Attitude era like myself, grew tired of wrestling for multiple reasons when they grew up, and this exciting sport of UFC with promised bloodshed and brawls was an exciting thing, not to mention the fights they wanted to see were generally getting made. It wasn't based on one fight PPVs, they had cards and a number of different personalities you could get behind, not just one guy like Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao. It took a number of things from professional wrestling, but the way boxing is ran today did them some favours too. People in boxing are way too greedy, UFC is still a young company and as the decades roll on, we'll see if it follows suit. As much flak as he gets, someone like Dana White is good for the growth of the UFC. MMA evolves on its own.
Cobra thanks so much. A couple of follow ups. How long before those other organisations are out of the picture? How comes Fedor did not sign with the UFC? What did the guys who beat him go on to do? Do you ever envisage a time where fighters break away from the UFC in pursuit of higher purses. For example could GSP & Silva set up a fight PPV themselves to take all the profits? So there really are no negatives effects from a fans point of view other than the production over kill in some fans eyes? What can boxing do to keep up with the UFC? Is PED's a big problem in the sport?
There are lots of elite wrestlers and kickboxers in MMA. No boxers because the money in MMA is a fraction of the money for mid-to-high level boxers.
