I thought you might have. Before he retired, there was obviously Fedor Emelianenko. Most elite fighters were around without joining the UFC after PRIDE. Pretty much everyone from Strikeforce jumped ship minus Josh Barnett, who's probably the biggest free agent I can think of, and I wouldn't really say he's truly elite. Honestly can't think of anyone elite who hadn't signed with the UFC when they had their chance eventually other than Fedor. There's a few guys in Bellator that the UFC would like to snap up (namely a fighter called Eddie Alvarez, but there's a big lawsuit between the two now) but nobody that the fans are shouting "bring him to the UFC!" Probably another positive to the UFC being in-house and essentially a monopoly. No rising star they can't get their hands on.
Flash Jab thanks so much. A couple of follow ups. How long before those other organisations are out of the picture? Do you ever envisage a time where fighters break away from the UFC in pursuit of higher purses. For example could GSP & Silva set up a fight PPV themselves to take all the profits? So there really are no negatives effects from a fans point of view? What can boxing do to keep up with the UFC? Are PED's a big problem in the sport? Whats peoples issue with Dana White?
UFC might buy out Bellator, but as long as the economy of MMA is strong, there'll be promotions for the guys UFC cut or the rising stars. The only way I envisage a new Pride like competitor to UFC is if they get too big for their boots and start pissing off their fighters or fighters want more money than they're getting. Competition is fine, but it's when the competition don't work together to make the fights people want to see that's the problem. It could happen, a guy like Fedor got there because he was never in the UFC, he was in Pride which didn't really have a 'one promoter as a spokesperson' thing, it seemed more done behind closed doors and exciting fights. Any fighter who has the money could pull out the UFC and start promoting MMA cards or their own fights, the fact that they haven't probably shows they're quite happy with their UFC deals. It probably will happen some day, whatever gets them more money in the pocket. UFC is very wrestling based. It will award fighters for taking their opponent down, keeping them there, and working. That's why a guy like GSP isn't as exciting as say, Anderson Silva. Some fighters want to win and wrestle, some want a scrap. Other people from the MMA forum or wherever could probably highlight the **** they hate about UFC/MMA. I'm pretty pro for both. Way too much money in boxing, promoter's have a stranglehold over fighters and fights, too much ego, too much politics. If you can't put on the fights that people want to see, it doesn't matter who's to blame, you're ****ing up the business. Guys like Bob Arum are always going to kill the industry. Sort that **** out and make the fights people wanna see, basically. PED's are a big problem with every sport, but there's been quite a few drug test failures in the past two years. Whether that's good because they're being caught out or bad because its giving out a negative vibe, I'm not sure. UFC are attempting to try and counter-act this TRT bull****, which basically is given to any fighter who says he needs a testosterone boost. In Nevada, I think as long as you're 4:1 compared to the normal male testosterone amount, you're okay. Anything over, you're probably cheating. PED's will never truly be defeated, some people are clean and some people cheat, unwillingly and willingly. What can you really do? All the UFC will do is what they can but also won't take a huge chunk out of their profits, like testing everyone pre and post-fight. They're still a business after all, its the athletic commissions job to sort this **** out, same in boxing. He's a loud mouthed promoter, who often will speak on emotion rather than logic. He does seem to want UFC to succeed, and he's driven and good for the company overall, but he'll talk a lot of **** and go back on his words a few time. Basically, he's a promoter, it comes with the territory. Tried to explain best I could, bit tired. Hope that helped.
Yeah but I think many people are still waiting for a consensus top 10/20 level boxer in their prime(or slightly past it) who moves over to MMA because he can't get any decent fights. Ishe was talking about making the move so surely there must be more.
What pisses me off is 'they've lost so are they elite?' WTF?!? :fire That is the mindset of modern boxing fans only. Pisses me off.
For what it's worth, a google turned up this list of career earnings for UFC fighters. 33 are over the million mark. Also, I think it's kind of the opposite of boxing. In boxing, you assume the real earnings are usually lower because of promoters and stuff. UFC guys generally make significantly more than their listed salaries, for the reasons given in the article. Anyway, here: http://www.mma-manifesto.com/ufc-fi.../salary-main/ufc-career-fighter-earnings.html
Flash Jab thanks allot. I found this online. http://www.mma-manifesto.com/ufc-fi...ain/2012-fighter-salaries-top-10-earners.html No way these guys can sit around making that kind of money while Mayweather makes what every UFC fighter put together gets in 1 fight? Surley they will start to break away soon? Did Brock Leaner affect the integrity of the sport at all? From the outsode looking in I saw a guy come from the WWF (i know he had elite am-wrestling background) become world heavyweight champion in 4 fights. If Triple H had beaten Klitscko after 4 fights I wouldn't think much off boxing for example! Was Lesner a legit fighter or a marketing tool?
They make much much more than is advertised. MMA is NOT comparable to boxing, stop doing it. Wayne Rooney scored loads of goals in his first season. Also not comparable. However there have been many fighters that have won titles in boxing in less than 5 fights. Well, a few exceptions anyway.
El Gato Figueroa has 23 fights and fought Randall Bailey for a IBF title eliminator for $6000. Meanwhile JDS had his 15th fight and fought for $200K.
60 Chael Sonnen* $ 582,000 Considering he's one of the most well known figures in MMA and has faced Silva (twice) Bisping, Maia and forthcoming bout thats a pretty poor return given his massive exposure. Marcos Maidana (who has a similar record losing 2 of his last 6) picked up $250,000 in Dec. It's very much swings and roundabouts.
