Foreman got ****ed around by good boxers when he was young, now put him with a guy like Liston who had a better jab and great boxing skills and incredible power and i think we have a winner...

People always think oh Foreman would bulldoze anyone, why didn't he to Peralta? a damn light heavy i know Peralta dosen't have the jab natural strenght or punching power of Liston that's for sure...

 

Yeah and why didn't Liston knock out Machen?

 

So George would fight Liston with the same tactics as Machen did...

I see what Flea sees, even knowing full well that Liston is the more varied and proficient operator. Yeah...out-monstering.

 

Anyone who tries to come out swinging wild, looping blows at a powerful, skilled fighter like Liston is going to get stretched. We saw prime versions of Sonny and Foreman in wars where they were forced to give AND take. Liston took the murderous bombs of Cleveland Williams (twice) and Mike DeJohn, gritted his teeth and knocked them both out. Foreman took the bombs of Ron Lyle, was staggered and bounced all over the canvas and almost knocked out.

In a mugging where the opposition gets blitzed before being able to mount much of an offense, few rank with George Foreman in closing the deal. In a give and take fight, Sonny proved that he was the better man. This would be a give and take fight. Liston knocks out GF within 5.

 

Im picking Liston. he was much better technically and he also had the size and mean streak
to push Foreman back and make him think twice about rushing forward.

Foreman is a monster for the first couple of rounds but i see Liston keeping his cool and breaking George down and taking him out.

 

Liston is overrated. He does not have that many tools and tricks in his bag. Great at throwing a lot of punches but he was ploddy and ponderous. This is indisputable. Foreman winged wide shots much more fluidly than the most technical of Liston's favorite punch variety. Liston has a great jab but Foreman's is underrated. The real key is Liston was a musclebound guy that fought at a comfortable pace. He never pushed an activity rate that was too high. He could punch and box but he liked to cruise. He had the tools to control a lot of the fighters he fought (Particularly because they were smaller, lesser, and because of his power) but if he were to fight Foreman he would be forced to fight at an uncomfortable pace.

The good thing for Liston is he can fight adeptly backwards. The bad thing is he never overcame any real sort of resistance or adversity. Foreman had an aura of invincibility without the bully complex. Liston didn't.

 

I see all the stylistic variables as favouring Liston here, and that would be at the forefront of my mind if this fight were happening tonight, and we were making last minute picks.
