As an aside announcers also sometimes call fighters in Hattons position after the Mayweather fight until the Pac fight as "the undefeated light welterweight champion" even though there is a defeat on his record.

Reason I asked this is, during Froch/Bute Ian Darke said the 4 names I mentioned in post 1, but not Hatton

I think if Froch is then Hatton is but its obviously down the state of boxing these days more than anything else.

Froch isn't really a three-time champ. He LOST the WBC belt to Kessler and was basically given it back against Abraham. It was a vacant title.

stop being picky. the title was also vacant for Pascal. in terms of ABC title Froch is a 3 time world champion.

The biggest strike against for me is that the fighter he lost his world title to, Ward, was still active and undefeated in the same division when Froch won his second title. You might be a title claimant but you arn't really a champ in that situation IMHO.

He still won it fair and square, Abraham was the favourite going into that fight. Most people on all the boxing websites picked him him KO to Froch in that one.

Given the criteria in the op he was a 3 time champ yeah.

Cracking list of achievements whichever way you slice it and THE champ at 140 for a number of years.

That has nothing to do with the issue. He was a paper champion.

At least he and Pascal were undefeated and the top contenders. What excuse was their for Abraham when both were coming off clear losses?

It's not picky, it was a ****ing farce.

That bothers me too. Froch's is a good guy and a fun fighter, but he got drubbed by Ward and can't claim any world champion status just because he has a shiny bauble.

Talking about alphabet title's mate. Not what we/I/you consider to be the proper World Champion.

It was pretty much 50/50 from what I can remember (at least on here).

For example the WAA is a recognized 'ABC Title'; so does that mean Monte Masters was a world title holder to you?

If not, why not, what do you mean by 'recognized'?

Sorry if it seems I am having a go, I am trying not to. It is just my point is if you start to 'recognize' 'ABC titles' to my mind, you open Pandora's Box.

As these terms are impossible to define unless you 'recognize' every 'ABC title'.

AA hadn't looked good in either of his last 2 fights before Froch.

The WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO are the recognised world titles. The liked of IBO, WBF...etc aren't
