Would Marciano have lasted in Manilla ?

Some people pick Rocky to triumph over this version of Ali but i have my doubts.

Ali still had a lot left for this fight and i have often wondered how Marciano's legendary stamina would have held up in those stifling conditions.

Out of curiosity did Rocky ever fight in that kind of heat and humidity ?

So place Rocky in the ring that night instead of Joe and how do you see it playing out ?

    Good thread :good

I see Ali having enough left at that point to beat Rocky.

    Cheers Stevie,

Sadly it was the real last hurrah from both but watching the pace of that fight and in that heat i have to lean towards an Ali win, either similar to how Frazier faired or points.

I just cannot see Rocky stopping that version of Ali and no way is he outpointing him that night.

I just can't see any version of Rocky being any busier than Frazier was that night which is why outpointing him is very unlikely imo.

If a verry weather worn version of Joe Frazier took Ali to the bring of disaster in this fight, then a prime Marciano would almost certainly beat him.

The heat is merely another variable that would work against the older and more eroded fighter.

Ali would get battered, very badly too and would be pushed to absolute exhaustion in order to keep Marciano off him.

Ali would probably win the first 4-5 rounds but as soon as Ali stopped moving, rested against the ropes and let Marciano start pounding him it will be all downhill. Marciano would be exstatic to have a such a large target in front of him that wasn't moving, and Ali would be foolhardy to think he'll get Marciano to tire out. Ali at the end of the TIM was shocked at how much stamina a badly faded Frazier had, a prime Marciano would be way too much.

    Marciano late TKO or UD.

I agree this is a plausible scenario but at the same time Marciano is going to take a hell of a beating before Ali slows down.

We know Ali coped with the oppresive heat ( barely ) and i wonder how this would effect Rocky, along with the shots he would be taking in return.

Marciano wouldn't tire. He had more stamina and was better trained than any fighter who ever fought.

Ali might win a TKO by cutting him. He had a knack for inflicting cuts. I wouldn't bet money on this fight either way, but I slightly favor Marciano.

Marciano would also become tired out by having an approximately forty pounds heavier man clinching and leaning on him.

Either way, two of my favourite heavyweights would be spending a good amount of time recovering.

So true. Manilla put years on Muhammad and Joe.

The Frazier of that night in 1975 gave Ali fits...Joe was past his prime...and blind in one eye...Marciano retired in April of 1956 at 49-0 with 43 KO's...while his powers were still intact......The Rock's conditioning and stamina were legendary...he beats this Ali on points...

This is a great question. Rocky certainly had the stamina to go all 15 with Ali, but I don't know if his face could withstand all the punishment. He would almost certainly get cut.

I love Joe Frazier, great man and great fighter but Marciano had 2 hands, a left hook and a right and had a unusual way of delivery, unorthodox and successful vs good boxers...very hard to beat Marciano from a distance with out getting hit his lean back and bend low crouch enabled him to spring up and land with odd placed shots, if we are talking about a prime Marciano he stops that version of Ali, stamina both were good but Frazier already lost his snap from FOTC to Manilla, Marciano even in his last fight vs Moore had the snap and the weird angle delivery ...Ali takes the count from accumulative punishment or RSC
