Like I've said about this before, the POWER is the wildcard Without Matthysse's power he has no chance. So all Lamont has to do is stick and move, which is not only Matthysse's weakness (as seen in the Alexander and Judah fights) but also something Peterson is more than capable of (he can do it all), lets see
Peterson is really tricky inside also. He can tie up really well, and is also physically strong, can get to the body with ease . His best move is when he dips in as a feint, then does it again and comes up with the left hook. Or he makes it look like hes gonna dip in, but turns it into an overhand right. And he makes sure to do plenty of feinting/feeling u out to make sure he can guard vs ur best shots first. Mix that with some snappy jabs upstairs and to the body. This is operating like a boxer-puncher, a counter puncher like a Danny Garcia or like Lamonts favorite fighter, Juan Manuel Marquez. Matthysse will have to constantly reset and deal with being tied up inside. If you pay attention, his defense consists of, lots of head/upper body movement, bending at the waist and getting low, lots of lateral movement/ stepping around, pivoting and circling away. Anyone who thinks his defense is just putting his earmuffs on is not watching close enough.
Cool...we will just wait and see but I think Lamont's inactivity will work against him I do give you credit for the Gracia-Khan prediction because even many non-Khan fans didn't give Garcia a chance too
I know styles make fights, and how fighter A does against fighter B has no bearing on fighter C. Peterson was put on the canvas by Bradley, not a huge puncher at all. He also went life and death with a chinny Khan. How in the World is he going to keep Matthysse off?
I think Matthysse has had too many soft touches recently to really say he can run over someone as tough, experienced and resilient as Peterson. And lets face it, Zab was there for the taking and he could hardly get a punch off those last couple of rds. Even Alexanders shoe-shining punches lowered Matthysses punch output. His best punch is that right hand. Once Lamont takes it away, smothers Lucas punches, he'll control the fight and watch how clean Lamont will land his left hook.
What are u nodding ur head for? Khan may have the better resume but he fought like a dirty pig in almost every one of them. Khans defense consists of pushing, holding the head down, holding and hitting, all of which he did in several of his lasts fights. Barrera, McCloskey and Judah all ended prematurely due to his dirty tactics(yes vs Zab too but Zab decided to be a drama queen). The best Khan has ever looked was vs Malignaggi which he also fought like a dirty pig in. Nearly had his head knocked clean off by Maidana. Lets hope Hunter can teach him how to box and look good in a fight for once.
This is definitely Peterson's strongest offensive trick. Watching Peterson against Holt though, I have to say he got tagged more than I was expecting. It may have been rust, but there was a trend in rounds 3 and 4 of getting tagged hard to the body while shelling up, and getting caught by quick straight right hands while he brought his left hand back low. Holt was reaching with them, but Matthysse's best shot is slipping a jab and coming back with a bomb of a straight right hand. Peterson is a slow starter, as he evidenced with Khan, Cayo, and Holt. He doesn't really commit himself to doing inside work until later in a fight, and his boxing early consists of one or two shots at a time. I think this will be a liability against someone like Matthysse, who isn't a super fast starter, but is more consistent in his pressure and sharp and very committed with his offense from the get-go. Whether Matthysse can pressure him is an interesting question. Peterson's movement is good, but he often gives up the center. He is probably stronger than Matthysse, but Mathysse's power is very real and will still find its way to Peterson's body at close range. I think that all things considered, Peterson's going to go into the second half behind, unless he can start very fast and back Mathysse up. But seeing how he performed against Cayo and Holt in the first half, I think he will have his work cut out for him by the 6th. His jab is a good tool, but if he keeps throwing it lazily, he got just end up getting dropped and hurt.
Peterson doesnt throw the jab lazy, but he steps in with it at times and i noted that as one of the things to be careful doing due to the right hand counter. I dont think Lamont will have to worry about Matthysses body shots. I think he will tie Lucas up on the inside unless he can land his own body shots without too much risk. I really think Matthysse dropping his right hand guard is going to be a problem. Lamont can be lethal with the left hook when hes low on the inside or when hes back up fighting off the backfoot, he is able to lead with it and catch u coming in. Matthysse also offers no headmovement or superior hand-speed which will be why youll see Lamont landing his shots more frequently while avoiding Matthysses best.
