Sonny Liston vs George Foreman. Prime for Prime?

The same applies to the durability debate then. I explained before Liston fought at a controlled pace and that Foreman winged every punch. Not to mention the heat Foreman fought in (One time in which he never acclimated to). Not to mention the pace of Foreman's ring-cutting. Foreman did everything at a higher gear and if you simply want to go by the fact then we can easily just proclaim Foreman to be much more durable. In that case, Liston is in trouble. We can also proclaim Frazier to have a better chin than Tyson because Tyson was counted out multiple times. There's more to it than that once you examine beyond the simplicity of the record.

 

Yeah, let's give Liston the mental edge & toughness edge as well. :nut

He lost the Marshall fight, and the Williams one ended in the next round. Liston wasn't a baby to pain, obviously. It was more about how he reacted to actually getting beat up.

 

Try emulating Foreman's style at Foreman's gear and than do the same with the way Liston fights. You're going to be able throw twice as many punches fighting in a ploddy, controlled state. Liston got away with this because of his respectable boxing skills but also because he fought smaller opposition. Yes, Jimmy Young is a superior version of Eddie Machen.

 

Better chin/durability: Mayweather or Pacquiao? Tyson or Frazier?

Liston would have gassed trying to fight at the same pace and in the same heat. Try to be honest with yourselves for once. And pace isn't reflective of punch totals. It's about how you throw, what you throw, your legs, etc. David Tua threw a lot of punches against Ike but never fought at Frazier's pace. It's rather simple to understand if you understand that it's not just about punch totals.

You say this about the punch output but in your earlier posts you mention punch out as greater stamina??? contradict yourself less

 

He never did roadwork 3years prior to that bout and all George did was stand there,take a beating and get him late.

 

Amazing, isn't it. Liston never gasses out, but Foreman does several times and so by some odd default Foreman has BETTER stamina than Liston.

Is this the same world where Foreman ranks outside top 10 HWs but Liston ranks third? The same world where Liston wins virtually every H2H fantasy matchup except for against Ali who incidentally is the only nightmare style for Liston (And maybe Louis, but that's 50-50 for these folks). How convenient and unlucky. Liston couldn't even beat that undeveloped, scarred blind kid from Louisville. Oh yeah, Liston was like 39 years old for that fight.

It's close. They are definitely on the same tier. Liston was a more explosive puncher, with more "snap" to his shots. Foreman was more of a clubber; heavy-handed. Both had huge power.

 

Its close enough that it would IMO come down to who is the better boxer and sets up their power better. The fighter who disregards the jab is probably going to lose the fight. That would probably be George Foreman.

Both guys are strong. Both guys are tough. The better boxing skills wins this. IMO that's Sonny Liston...and yes Liston`s jab could stop anyone In their tracks.

 

I saw an interview with Angelo Dundee. He said that he saw Sonny Liston knocked a fighter`s teeth out with his jab.

 

I'll admit, I am half tempted to reconsider my h2h rating of liston and Dempsey.
