Merchant is very underrated imo. Might not have had the best technical knowledge of the game, but he had good historical knowledge and wit. There was some ATG quotes from him right before and after fights.

The new rules guy is horrible I think people don't appreciate how easy it is to sound dumb talking about boxing, the hate RJJ Jr got at the ******* site over the Ruslan fight made me really think about it.

And yes, of course guys like Bernstein are great and more knowledgeable about boxing, but if you already know boxing, who cares? Entertainment first.

For a former ATG champion, george didn't half talk some amount of **** though. He often seemed to not know what the hell was going on in the ring, and his thoughts often went against 't what was actually going on in the ring. Larry Merchant owned him regularly for his bull**** talk:good

    Opposite imo.

Correct, especially for having covered the game for decades as both a writer and broadcaster. Pretty woeful technical/analytical prowess really, considering that.

Well, yeah, he was around the sport for a long time so inevitably stuff is bound to stick - but it's hardly as though he was dropping obscure references off the cuff like Dennis Miller.

I'd say there is a strong possibility that Kellerman despite being half Merchant's age would completely own him in old-time boxing trivia, being a diehard academic of it.

    Eh...to each their own, I guess. :!:

Not in the last decade. (if ever)

Hell no. HBO should have put him out to pasture years ago.
