What credibility HBO had Merchant brought. Now we have Max Kellerman trying to keep his job fawning over Maywether and secretly wishing he were black. Kissing up and being the ultimate company man, its nauseating.
One comment. I don't get much into broadcasters, yet one guy I always liked is Al Bernstein when he worked with Barry Tompkins. I thought they were a good combination. Anyone with Al.
As a journalist he became a familiar voice. His qualities that detracted from his ability as a journalist, heavy bias and constant ethnocentric rambling. He will be remembered (sometimes fondly), but missed I'm not so sure. I personally appreciate actual boxers insights during the bout. A fellow fighter has been there and done that and so instead of ripping another fighter apart, they dissect the exchange and explain mistakes/options. You can watch something all your life but until someone explains the nuances you never really know what it is your looking at.
Afternoon, John. I was wondering if (And I imagine you had) you'd met Merchant and whether you had an interesting story or two to share? I liked Merchant sometimes over the years, he had his ups and downs IMO. But, he the last years here it almost felt as if he just wanted to inject negativity into the broadcasts. Don't know whether to think he was just tired of it all and didn't even want to be there anymore, or what..... :conf :!:
I loved merchant he hated on most of my favourite fighters but he's like one of them funny old uncles who knew nothing but had something to say. I didn't really care if he didn't have much technical knowledge I ain't no casual fan that needs telling why a fights turned around or it's going the way it is I just found him entertaining. Larry and George Best team ever.
Lil bit. But I don't often notice the void. With Emmanuel now gone too, I've become accustomed to hearing the voices of Roy and Max provide the narratives alongside Lampley's play-by-play.
It's funny because I was to made about the same thread, then seem this.Merchant was the best commentator, the necesary critical note in that biased house full of agendas, and an intelligent guy with acid sense of humor.Really the new guy in the direction of HBO is ****ing stupid and are doing all the things bad.
I don't miss him a bit. Guy was total *******. I don't understand people hating a guy for years, then getting nostalgic when he's gone. I wish some station broadcasting boxing would go back to one announcer with a boxer alongside. An announcer who does not feel need to talk anytime others are quiet. Few months ago I was watching 1952 closed circuit version of Marciano Walcott. One announcer, no one else, did great job. If Lampley-Kellerman--Jones, or ******* Teddy Atlas and Tessitore were doing fight, they would scream so much it would have ruined it.
I never wanted him out, even when I often disagreed with his opinions regards Mayweather, Klitschkos and MartÃnez. And to fire an almost 90 years man is classeles as ****.HBO is in total decadence, the ship is sinking really fast.
