Well no, that's typical sparring and how it's meant to be really. It goes against those who say Dempsey was always overly mean to sparring partners. Although Dempsey looks like he may not be playing fair there too.

What a a Goddamned Horrible Response to my Response. How can you even Type such Tripe? How can you even look at yourself in the mirror?... Jesus.

    Quit with the drama, granny.

It's a sparring match. The hugging here was practice because they knew that given a longer fight Willard would try to use his weight. You can plainly see that their clinches are not exactly strangleholds.

Because a guy has a jab (and Tate's is a half-hearted, pushed affair while Waldo's is a heavyweight power punch) means he shares in common a lot with 95% of heavyweights.

I see a wide open Dempsey here, with a flawed offense, little ability to throw a straight punch and an open pumpkin head when he tries to crowd. Good thing he hired such mugs to be sparring partners.

Trying to judge Jack Dempsey working out with Big Bill Tate, analysing every move ,ducking, weaving etc, is damn silly...I have seen hundreds of sparring matches
wherein the star fighter looks less impressive in the sparring than his hired sparmate, whom in a regular bout ,the employer would demolish the employee...Dempsey was trying out many moves with Bill Tate and other sparmates minutes later. For example Dempsey dropped Big George Godfrey numerous times training and in a "real" match would murder Bill Tate and all his sparring partners....That is why they are called sparring mates...

Absolutely true. We don't know what their intent was here. Obviously, the whole clinch exercise was just that, a walk around.

Look at the Harry Greb footage we have and his silly workout. Hardly befits his greatness

True S. The same posters picking apart Dempsey's sparring with Bill Tate
who he "employed" for several years, would have a feast if someone posts
an Ali session in which he is battered on the ropes and uses the rope-a-dope to avoid punishment...We have enough threads comparing two fighters in a regular fight. That has meaning.....

He looks impressive here he fought Willard in the same manner but in this video he's clearly more confident, Bill Tates punch hasnt earned his respect.

Bill Tate, I'm glad you have not addressed the footwork question because you have to be blind to see Tates footwork is superior, jabs a lot follows with the right and clinches Dempsey as soon as he comes at him eerily similar to Klitschko.

You see that but this is coming from a man who said Klitschko was "poisoned" after NOT SEEING a punch that winded him.

Young Dempsey sparred like he fought..you should know this. He fights here exactly as he did vs Willard but Tate is a better fighter.

Yeah, but it certainly depends on your philosophy I guess. I've seen Roach & Pac hammer the details on the mitts in terms of the game-plan, and go pretty hard in sparring to the point of giving sparring partners an incentive to drop Pac (Even vice versa for the last Marquez fight).

No sir M...If Dempsey "fought" his sparring partners as he fought Willard
he would have to pay life insurance premiums for his hired help...OF course Dempsey had a reputation as a badass in his sparring sessions. But NEVER to the extent of koing them as he did a Willard . Remember Dempsey trained and sparred with MWs and even his pal lightweight Joe Benjamin.
So did Dempsey go hell to bent in his sparring sessions ? NAY. A slugger as Dempsey was never looks as impressive in sparring sessions as a boxer does. Their forte in the ring was to go all out and eventually wear down or flatten an opponent in a real fight. Until they connect sluggers look awkward at times. Rocky Graziano whom I saw many a times at Stillman's refused or hated to spar with slick boxers,as he looked foolish at times cause he couldn't go all out with his right hand grenade in training sessions. Same with Dempsey...

His style is exactly the same as he fought Willard except Tate is moving hell of a lot more and clinching when he came in,im not saying he would brutalize them all like Willard I said he's fighting the same style. Dempseys feet are too fast and his body moves too him to be considered a slugger...Don't compare Graziano to Dempsey they're too different, Dempsey was born to be in the ring while Graziano was more street. Go all out and wear them down? He KO'd most of his opponents his early rounds and tried to take Loughlan heads off in sparring;and this was when he was washed up and then you have the galentos rumors, his ruthless rep in sparring
