Prime Spinks might actually have troubled Floyd more than JMM did. Spinks could literally run around the ring, whereas Marquez is more of a circling plodder.

Floyd will always find a comfort level against someone like JMM, regardless of the "success" that Juan may have in spots. He can beat him countering because of his reflexes. He can beat him leading because of his speed. He can drop Juan's output and overall force of his punches because of his D.

Marquez lowered the power on his own punches so that they would have a chance of landing... and still landed at like a 12% clip.

He knows he can't win. Nacho knows it, too.

    Cool story, though.

This wasn't the intention of the thread. It's rare there's much technical discussion around here, it should be welcomed.

    Very nice Bogo.

LOL. You don't have to fight going backwards. You can also circle, which Floyd does very well.

And yes, Floyd wants his opponents to try and counter. That's what Marquez tried to do. And failed. Same with Zab. Failed. I'm amazed you did an analysis from an outside perspective and came up with the exact plan to lose against Floyd. You think Castillo was successful because he forced Floyd to take the lead? Exactly.

I would say the Spinks idea circa 2008 and people would laugh and say Castillo is the only way

First it was De La Hoya was too big, then it was Hatton is a great swarmer and body puncher, then it was he retired because Cotto and Margarito were too strong hit too hard and could get inside and swarm him

    I always called bull****

Look at Pacquiao he moved up to fight DLH, Hatton, Cotto, Margo, and everyones like this guys too big blah blah and the speed killed

Pacqiauo started losing when guys matched him in speed and skill

Floyd isnt troubled by pressure fighters, Floyd got called past it when Cotto won 2 rounds vs him

I think a slick boxer is his most dangerous opponent a guy who wont lead and let Floyd counter but a guy who is willing to move and make it a pose fest and make Floyd come out of his comfort zone

Can't agree with you. It's clear, as evidenced by the gif's, that JMM landed solid shots as Floyd reached for them. You make it sound as if Floyd is at his best pressuring opponents who want to counter. Castillo had success being an excellent, physical inside fighter who uses continuous pressure. JMM can lead at times but he's not going to fit into that mold. Nobody with Marquez's counter-punching ability has committed to defensively circling or stepping out against Floyd, so it's not a dynamic that has been fully fleshed out. Floyd's never been made to chase excessively. We can agree to disagree since we clearly have different ideas on what brought Floyd success that night and throughout his career.

So Castillo had 100 times more success taking the lead, yet you're gonna roll with a couple punches landed by Marquez. Wow.

Marquez isn't slick or quick enough to pull it off. Even Pac would make Floyd miss far more than Juan could ever dream of. The bottom line is, if Floyd is having trouble against JMM in the center of the ring, he's not going to get careless. He's going to walk him down and beat him in the trenches.

JMM is a touch too wide with his punches -even in Bogo's gifs- to consistently land on Floyd and, really, who ever has?

So you would take Marquez, a natural counter-puncher, and make him copy a game-plan used by a natural pressure fighter with a weight advantage from over a decade ago who lost clearly in the rematch?

Pressure works when done right. But inviting a counter-puncher to lead in order to counter him is a common strategy that Marquez could explore since Floyd reaches a bit when pressuring. Imitating someone like JCC is not realistic here.

No, Marquez could never beat Floyd. Why? Because of his style. But you're saying...he needs to do more of his style

The blueprint was laid out by Castillo and Augustus. Not Marquez. And if you think otherwise based on 2 minutes of success that you saw JMM have, I suggest you watch the other 34.

I never said Juan was the guy to do the Cory Spinks 4 corner strategy I mentioned

I think someone like Devon Alexander has the speed to move around the ring

I do agree with you in part, but (and I never thought I would do this) I agree with Jim Lampley for once, I beleive during Mayweather - Corrales I think it was, he talked about Corrales attempting to counter Floyd, and attempting to 'counter-punch the counter-puncher, being a sort of fools paradise'

I think against orthodox fighters Mayweather generally becomes more aggressive when he has sustained success countering in the middle of the ring, this is when he becomes vulnerable, of course someone capable of a versatile gameplan like JMM would be capable of switching the pace and going from counter-puncher to aggressor, but I feel he would eventually fall into the trap of leading again himself, unless he were to land some huge shots on Floyd.

    Nah, Floyd beat Augustus severely.

It's not necessarily a certain style that troubles Floyd. It's more a set of attributes. Castillo was physically stronger and had a cast iron jaw. Pretty good jab, not all that easy to hit. Could fight on the inside. Floyd did plenty of leading of JLC, and it was mostly a quick potshot to keep the guy off. He spent as much much energy moving as he did doing anything offensively. Even though Jose lost the rematch, he won like 5 rounds.

Now Zab Judah, he had all the tools necessary to at least try it the way Bogo is suggesting. Excellent quickness. Good jab. Could punch on the move. Unpredictable punch selection. Rolled well with punches.

Marquez is just too slow to hope to win a feint fest with Floyd.

Yeah he beat him easy but he struggled because Augustus kept coming.

I agree on style. What it boils down to is being able to impose your will on Floyd and set the tempo/control the pace. Don't think he won five rounds in the rematch though. He was completely flummoxed that fight.
