Sergio Martinez looks like a poor man's Laszlo Papp. I also am not sure where you've got Philly from :huh But glad you're enjoying the thread and thanks for contributing to it :good
Only joking. Asians are as good as their exposure to the sport, like anyone. Styles were at one time quite distinct from each other, but with globalisation, no longer. Same thing in other sports, like football, where once you had the simple, classical, composed playing of Germany representing the opposite to Brazil who were known for their silky, inventive attacking skills, like England versus Cuba, going back a few years, in the boxing stakes.
Yes, will it make you feel any better if it can be seen by some the Chinese HWs that participated as well. Yeah, that was another style you saw from the Ukrainians, but generally only from there smaller fighters. Should have specified with the bigger fighters. Thanks for proving my point, though.
Exactly, it is terribly amateurish and just plain awful. When a fighter uses it it screams stamina deficiencies.
That's true but not so much anymore as you can find pretty much anything now. On a related note i made a thread a while ago about Soviet MW great Viktor Ageev who fought in the 1960's and had an extremely improvisational style. Here's the thread with some footage if you're interested. http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=423167 HW's Usyk, Rudenkiy and Arkhypenko all use it as do MW's Khytrov and Mytrofanov so its rather common from top to bottom. That's actually more like the German style, or more specifically the Sauerland style. Helenius, Huck, Abraham, and so on. All those guys look like they come off a production line. Eastern Europeans don't tend to have a set style like that. Both the Klits have very unique styles that involve a large degree of reflex action to pull off, keeping the hands low and baiting opponents forward etc. Povetkin's got quite an old school American style that involves a lot of in-fighting, quick sharp hooks and uppercuts in combination, lots of bodywork. Chagaev and Ibragimov have a classic amateur style, wide stance, lots of feinting and parrying with the lead hand and so on.
Eubanks > Graham, even if Graham clowned him in sparing 4 a while, until Eubanks found his way with him 2:yep
Many Cubans have a similar style, perhaps its due to their training methods. Relaxed, fluid & with excellent balance & poise, its the most aesthetically pleasing style to watch imo. For some reason they seem to produce lots of southpaws as well.
Nowadays yes, but all the Cuban's in the 60s I can think of were orthodox fighters. All the greatest Cubans are orthodox, like Kid Chocolate of course. Must be a change in the methods or a trend thing, as it was in Uganda with everyone copying Kalule (and he copied his brother) Or that there's more left handed people trying boxing in Cuba nowadays
