who hit harder, marciano or tyson?

marciano broke bones and ruptured blood vessels...LaStarza has surgery to remove blood clots that had formed in his arms from Marciano's beating...he sheared Rex Layne's teeth off at the nubs...he smashed Lee Savold's teeth up into his gums...he almost killed Carmine Vingo after their fight in NYC...Vingo was in a coma..and although he recovered to some extent...he never fought again...Rocky ruined a lot of guys...it took some fighters months to get over a pounding at the hands of the"Brockton Blockbuster"...Rocky hit like a much bigger man...

 

I'd say Marciano had harder one punch power but Tysons speed made him more of a dangerous puncher

 

I would say as far as power goes its a dead tie, but with that being said The Rocks gonna take a hell of a lot more shots than Tyson...Iron would be all over him...

 

Tyson easy, though this question doesn't matter at all. There are plenty of bullish men in the heavyweight division that punched harder than both, and they never amounted to much.

What's important is your overall game. Tyson was the most elite of frontrunners, able to start in overdrive and overrun fresh opponents with his speed, sharp combinations and agression. If you got through that, the storm subsided somewhat. Not that it's easy going after that, mind you. It was made possible by Cus D'Matatos hellish training menu.

Marciano did it with stamina and determination. Broke you down, beat you completely when you had nothing left to give or your heart was broke.

This more then their power enabled their success.

 

Tyson by a long way

 

I say the biggest pound for pound hitters under 200 are Fitz, Langford, Satterfield and Rocky .... there are others right up there ... Joe Louis was quoted as saying he thought for raw power he thought Satterfield was a bigger puncher than Marciano ...

 

Damn good post.:good, Hitting hard only counts if you can catch a world class fighter on on the chin. If you cant do that you are not dangerous. Tyson and Marciano could both do this but like you say power alone is not enough.

 

I belive even if you compensate for the weight difrence. Tyson hit harder than Marciano.

 

Its a different kind of punch. without the element of surprise Rocky still hurt just feeling his way in. Tyson had atomic speed and sharpness but i dont hear anyone say "every time he touched you it hurt" comments from ex opponents like you do with naturally heavy handed guys like foreman, shavers and Rocky Marciano. Tyson hit you before you knew what was going on so he benefited from a guy not getting a chance to brace himself before impact. Dont get me wrong, it gets the job done but its not like that for the heavy handed guys, you brace yourself and you still wake up after the ten count.

 

Anybody who says Marciano is a racist piece of trash or just plain stupid. Why do you simple minded people keep comparing a 180 cruiser weight to 220 plus pound heavyweights?

 

Perfect examples are Ron Lyle and Luis Firpo ... both murderous punchers but limited fighters ... throw in Bonecrusher Smith and Mike Weaver, perhaps the most under rated hitter of them all ..

 

:good, often the difference is timing. The timing allows the punch to land at the most explosive arc of its travel. You can have a guy who can hit a bag way harder than the next guy but along comes a less explosive guy who lands the perfect shot with less force behind it creating devestating impact in an actual fight situation. The guy who knocks the heavy bag off the chains is only making a 40% connection in the actual fight. Hits harder but it dosnt count. The other guy dosnt hit as hard but effortlessly leaves people cold. He lands sweet each time but the other guy is more explosive only he cant deck a good fighter.

All champions are knockout punchers up to a level. If they have the edge each damn time and face lesser fighters all the time they look like king kong. The question is can they time a knockout against a great fighter?

Tyson and Marciano both answer this question with an emphatic YES.

Yes but it is still splitting hairs because if the end result is the same does it really matter if it was a Joe Louis timed execution or a walloping from George Foremans clubbing strength?

Being able to knock out a great fighter is all that is required. Both could do it.


I do agree that raw untrained power existed more in Marciano because i feel its obvious that he relied less on a trained technique and practised timing. The man was like a smaller Foreman with stamina. he just hurt even without needing as clean a connection to get the same effect.

 

KOing a "faded" Larry Holmes is no mean feat since no one else ever accomplished it before or in the long time after he kept fighting. Not Evander, not Mercer, not McCall. In fact I'm becoming more and more convinced that that knockout is criminally underrated, and a prime example not only of Tyson's finishing ability (which is well known), but of his vast one punch power as well.
