JG, it started a fine discussion on a semi dormant board. Who cares the ultimate answer. Its the journey not the destination that matters. Now, if this board could just veer from the same few heavies at all times and focus on the other divisions occassionally.

 

Actually Marciano got up dazed and goofy after that knockdown.
The ref erroneously gave him a standing 8 count and gave him a chance to clear his head. The standing 8 had been waved for that fight.

Moore always maintained he thought he could have finished him if the referee hadn't screwed up. It may have been baloney but he may have been right.

 

More of an attribute than ability but his determination comes to mind, as do his conditioning.

How many of you clowns could give me major details about fighters of the 1950s like "Stillman's was an airless armpit in summer, and Bob Baker sweated like a pig training bundled from head to toe, constantly wincing taking off his wraps after sparring."

How would you compare the bigger punchers of the 1950s...Cleveland Williams, Mike DeJohn, Nino Valdes, Clarence Henry, Bob Satterfield...who stood out to you in terms of raw power?

Determination 'n conditioning won't help if you're hit in the head with bat, which is tantamount to a Moore sneak right. Most fighters (with all the moxie in the world) would more be going through the motions than punching back with power after eating a few of those.

Makes me wince now thinking of Bob Satterfield. You get pneumonia from the wind of one of his hooks.

 

Cool. I hadn't paid attention to that. I did notice he wasn't as buzzed or staggered as I thought he should be but thought that was too obvious.

 

it is a rare quality indeed. A hurt fighter is on instinct and often whilst he is still willing his coordination is disturbed enough to effect his full power. Marciano remains dangerous when hurt. it is a mystery. I think his forward momentum took away punching room from his opponent and those short arms came into their own at short range regardless of marciano knowing where he was. As long as he was close the other guy was always in danger if Rocky was hurt or not. Doing the opposite of what should work just seemed to always work out for Rocky. He was a unique fighter alright.

 

John, I've often heard people write off Mike DeJohn as a puncher. Any thoughts on DeJohn's left hook?
