its funny everytime i watch a boxer dominates and schools another fighter the fans are always booing and classify it as boring...the commentators last night even compared it to grappling in mma. is this how casual fans see it?? who are the majority of casual fans are they mexicans? or just supporters of one fighter??
Casual fans simply aren't true fans of the sport. They don't particularly care about varying boxing styles or tactics, a lot of em just want to see a war. Boxing to them is two guys punching each other, and that's it. They're bloodthirsty, like going to a gladiator event. That's why they boo when they see a guy avoiding punishment. They expect blood and guts. and i guess they're rationalizing that when a fighter doesn't deliver up to these standards when they have paid to go see them, they let it be known. it comes down to respecting the craft and its variables. they have no respect for it.
I'm not generalizing so I'm not wrong. Don't even try to claim there aren't loads of people who go to boxing events who don't think in the way I described. I realize it goes beyond that, where people are just butthurt their favourite fighter is getting schooled.
did you not see the OP mention so called fans calling other fighters 'boring'? in the majority of cases, a fighting style described as boring would be a boxer avoiding punishment, to these people, 'running'. it's the casual fans who make those claims who i was addressing. they wouldn't appreciate guys like Malik Scott or Andre Ward.
they love mayweather because of his personality outside of the ring. everytime a boxer fights a smart fight he is called a ***** for not wanting to engage heck even alavarado was critisized by some last night for his movement
i guess i figured i didn't need to when it was a direct response to exactly what the OP was talking about: "the fans are always booing and classify it as boring"
Almost all fans, casual or not, want to see some kind of action. Only a select few enjoy the art of doing the minimum amount necessary. Boxing like every sport is a form of entertainment. Why should I waste my time watching a guy jab and duck for 10 rounds? If a guy likes to look slick and fancy while throwing nothing why not try dancing?
Im a british fan seeing as i live in the UK and Calzaghe is responsible for getting me into boxing (Jeff Lacy fight in 2006) but Calzaghe retired back in 2008 and i still have a great love for the sport, even more so now than i did then. But I can sort of see your point, Carl Froch is known for getting into wars but he isnt as well known as Calzaghe was despite Joe only being recognized from 2006-2008 and Froch from 2008-present. I have a few friends from nottingham who havent even heard of him but a Romanian friend who knows about him purely for one fight (it wont take a genius to figure out who)
I was a little disapointed in Alvarado going straight for the clinch at times but hell it worked well enough for him to survive and win the fight so respect to him for that and working to a game plan, he boxed much better than in the first fight The article on the front page says bet on Rios for a 3rd fight but quite frankly seeing the post fight interview I think Rios is going to go straight for it and bull rush Alvarado which might lead to Mike winning the next fight if he boxes smart and he did hurt Rios in that 3rd or 4th round . . . . sadly I fell asleep after the 6th from exhaustion and the fact it was 5 am which i am gutted about seeing as it is the FOTY so far now even from only watching the first half of the fight
I totally disagree with the idea that those of us who want to see "two guys punching each other" i.e., exciting, back and forth wars, are simply "casual" fans. I've been a diehard boxing fan for 35 years and it is precisely because of the unique excitement and action this sport generates that I became and have remained a hardcore fan for so long. Some of us don't watch for the "sweet science" aspect, or whatever. It IS boring in many respects to watch two guys dance around without really ENGAGING. I WANT to see ACTION, to see guys tasting canvas, getting knocked out etc. And I would venture to say that most boxing fans do, whether they will admit it or not.
It's his personalty. There's like a certain aura around Mayweather that people find attractive. There are also loads of bandwagoners (another common theme among casual fans) who like Mayweather because of his popularity and perceived unvulnerabilty.
i also love boxing because of fights like last night ofcourse everyone loves excitement thats why i appreciate the different styles that exists in boxing and i dont blame those who watch fights cause of excitement but those who critisize a guy for winning a fight on boxing skills and not for outbrawling the other guy
I love a good knockout too, and I agree that you can be a hardcore fan without appreciating all styles. The difference comes when people are disrespecting the sweet science and it's many variables by disregarding different styles and only giving credit to one style. It's variances in style that makes boxing as exciting and strategic as it is. It's my personal view that if you regard not engaging in intermittent Bradley-Prodnikov type brawls as boring, then you can't possibly be a true fan of boxing. You may be a fan of watching two guys punch each other madly, but there has to be a respect of the sweet science to be classified as a fan of boxing.
To be fair the reason the people went there was for Alvarado/Rios II So they went for a war so the other fights woulda been boring to them if they only love wars
Yeah, I see what you mean. The "sweet science" isn't my thing, but you won't see me slagging off a guy like Mayweather. It may not be my thing, but I surely recognize it takes a lot of skill, and while I don't enjoy it as much as good brawl, I will watch these fights and appreciate them for what they are, even if my heart isn't exactly pounding like when I watch fights like Corrales-Castillo I! The one thing I don't like is when one of these "slick" guys showboats and embarrasses their opponent. Pernell Whitaker did this sort of **** all the time, dipping down to the canvas and other unnecessary crap. THAT I do not go for.
