Mayweather is 36yrs old and moved up 5 weight divisions. If he feels he wants to stay at 147 because he can keep his longevity its his right. The guy has been fighting around his rehydrated weight for the majority of his career often fighting bigger guys the majority of his career. He moved up to fight DLH and Cotto to make big money fights that ppl were interested in. He didn't move up to 154 to dominate the JMW division. I hope he does it one more time vs Caneo-Trout winner. Other then that the 36yr old dude is allow to fight at a weight that allows him to perform at a high level.
That's fair, but then lets not talk about him being judged to a higher standard. Hopkins was older when he moved up 2 weight classes vs Tarver. Marquez also older when he took on better comp in his 5th weight class, compared to SWW Cotto.
Thats because Mayweather has already been fighting at his rehydrated weight. Lets say Mayweather continued to cut weight and stayed at 135 and 140 longer then he did. Then moved up to 147 late in his career. That doesn't make his jump in weight more impressive then moving up in weight early to fight bigger guys.
Nobody is even talking about him going to 160, only defending at 154 against the best comp there. That's totally analogous to JMM fighting top guys at 147. It's what's expected of any good champ, especially when you're #1 ranked at the weight.
It's largely haters wanting to see them lose. At least when I'm biased against a guy I admit it. I'd love Margarito to fight GGG at 160 so I could see his plaster using ass KTFO. See how easy that is?
yet floyd likes to be the guy who fights guys coming up 2 weight divisions like RG and JMM. Even ortiz was coming up to 147 , floyd being his 2nd fight ever. when was the last time Floyd even fought a natural welterweight? Hatton came up....well i guess Shane...but he was damn near 40
He didn't make up the ranking. All he did was go after big money fights with Hoya and Cotto. If there is a guy like Canelo or Trout out there then sure it would be good for him to challenge those guys. But I don't see the need for him to stay at JMW if he can make WW comfortably.
Ortiz outweighed Mayweather by 15pds on fight night and is naturally bigger then Mayweaher. Hatton Cut from 170 which earned him the name Ricky Fatton. Carrying more weight is actually a positive for Hatton's smothering style as long as the opponent isn't a big guy himself.
not sure what your point is. fact remains all the guys were welterweight newbies. dont care what their walking around weight is, dont care what weight they cut. but somehow guys coming up from lower divisions are still bigger than floyd by 2 divisions
The weight class doesn't mean as much as the opponent they are fighting. Mayweather isn't a big WW so them fighting him at WW doesn't mean much. Marquez though I can see the argument since Mayweather is clearly bigger then him. But Ortiz and Hatton no. Now if it was someone like Margarito who was 5'11 and came in to the ring at 160 then weight would matter. Which is why Marquez can be expected to fight someone like Pac or Bradley at WW but never be expected to fight someone like Margarito or Paul Williams at WW. Because its all about the opponent.
He's almost the only guy in boxing who actually fights at the weight of the division he's competing in by the time fight night rolls around. These other mother****ers are on some grotesque ****. Junior Welters are actually Middleweights, big enough to fight and get their ass beat down by someone like Marvin Hagler.
yeah, he's straight oldschool. Bradley was like that in his first 2 fights at WW, but then he became a little piggy after the Pac fight
