Why do people underrate Calzaghe on here?

Or maybe because he fought in one of the weakest divisions in boxing 98-2006?

Or maybe because he spent 10 years defending a title that was even respected, against the likes of Ashira, Veit, Jiminez, Sobot, Salem, Thornberry, Pudwell, McIntyre, Starie etc etc?

 

Ive seen a lot of guys praise Paulie for getting where he is despite his brittle hands and little power, and i agree he should get respect for it. It shows a lot of grit and determination, and also shows the quality in the rest of his game.

I already said Calzaghes resume left a bit to be desired but he was still a two weight world champ, holds a hell of a lot of title defenses (against quite a few bums, but there were definitely tough fights mixed in) and he did it all with hands made of glass.

Does it make JC an ATG? Of course not. But the amount of hate the guy recieves is unfair imo.

 

I have yet to see the real answer to the question. Joe gets beat down so much because he was just ok and to many of his fans try to make out to be more than what he is. he has no excuse for having the resume he put together, his style was the worst I have seen of any "top" fight and he hid out at home, in the Newbie SMW division with the **** WBO of the day (the rated a dead man two times). not to mention you have fools on here who tries to discredit every fighter within 7 degrees of separation of him. I said in the past that Joe was the GOAT at SMW (mainly on his longevity in such new and weak division). That legacy has been or is soon to be surpassed by Ward.

If his fans wanted to truly to enshrine the legacy of slappy joe, they would stop making pointless threads about him. the guy is retired . . . post that **** in classic

 

I think he receives hate for a few reasons.

1. His fans vastly overate him.

2. He was very arrogant, and we've all seen on here countless times, links in which he claimed that he chased Roy and the big fights out there. He's always played the victim - who was desperate for big fights, but who was avoided etc. He's contradicted himself so many times over the years backtracking on what he's said.

3. His fight with Roy, and his show boating left a bad taste.


That was for two reasons.

1. He'd dismissed Roy as any type of threat on two occasions, even going as far as to say the fight would be pointless.

2. He stuck his chin out in the air with his arms low, against a guy who he WOULDN'T fight when prime. He wouldn't have dared to have done such a thing had it been 8 years or so earlier.

Afterwards he proclaimed himself as the legend killer, for beating Roy and Hop.

Someone like Eubank who fought great fighters, but in his own words didn't pursue the big name American fighters, because he was happy with his contract etc, gets a ton of respect from fans. If Joe had have pushed himself harder, or stayed back and been honest like Eubank, he too would have gained a lot more respect.

But he didn't do that. He had fights at 168 against the likes of McIntyre, mentioned Roy's name afterwards, and then did absolutely nothing to follow up his words, and try and get the fight. He would then happily tell Journalists how he was avoided, and he was too risky etc.

He really didn't do himself any favours with the way he carried himself.

But he was a great fighter.
