The style itself is relatively sound. After all Winky Wright made a career off it. But it requires certain attributes that not everyone possesses, and the fact that such diverse physical specimens are being forced to use it shows poor/lazy coaching in my view.

 

Yeah, but it's sort of a chicken-egg situation. I mean, this is what they're being taught. If that's what you're teaching and practicing, how are you ever going to learn & develop those skills. You've never going to get comfortable with that ability. It's hardly inspiring. It's almost like teaching someone do to what's alright and most natural. Let's just focus on your strengths and completely neglect and overlook your weaknesses (Literally, and figuratively).

 

Puerto Rican Fighters are oddly enough boxer-punchers. They won't go on an all out brawl, nor a ches match, but in between, boxing and landing powerful blows. Carlos Ortiz, the best Puerto Rican boxer is one of the best boxer-punchers of all time, so that's possible influence.

 

Winky was a great counter puncher and used his gloves to catch and parry shots too not just block. The German school fighters dont know what any of those words even mean. Guys like Winky or Kotelnyk arent just "high guard boxers" they're complete fighters who also use a high guard.

 

Excellent link. Learned a bunch. I have a whole new appreciation for Russian boxing history. Every other day on this forum I feel once again like I don't know a damn thing about boxing. Yet, I feel ike when I talk to the casual fan, I'm an expert. Thanks for dropping knowledge on me.

A lot of Irish fighters I've seen, especially at a lower level, seem to buy into the fighting Irish sort of spirit/ideal. Most are come forward fighters, I've found pure boxers hard to come by. (This could just be me being ignorant to the Irish boxing scene but it's what I've noticed)

 

I remember Checa of Panama coming over in the late 80s and helping train 'honourary' Irishman Espana and Cordoba.
