whats your favourite era in boxing history

For the timezone that I'm too young to have actually been there for,I agree with your pick. Some fascinating fighters came out of that period.


For my own lifetime as a boxing fan,it's the seventies for heavyweights that I loved the most. Particularly the first five years of the decade.

 

1980s

 

Mid 80's to mid 90's - if you can call that an era. Incredible fighters were active and great fights were made.

Perhaps just 80's is a better pick, since the early 90's was a bit transitional in several divisions and since you had guys like Arguello and Sanchez in the early 80's, but then you'd have to forego McCallum's rematch with Kalambay and his two first with Toney...

Can I go with something like the "post Ali era"?

 

Not an expert on bygone era's but for me the late 80's and early 90's ,when i first really got into the sport are still the best . Tyson seemed invincible, you had Bruno all over the tv, our own fab 3 of Benn,Watson and Eubank, the emergence of Lennox Lewis, Bowe and Holy.

 

For my dad his favorite era was the 1920s with these type fighters
HW -Dempsey, Tunney
LH-Tunney, Gibbons, Loughran, Jack Delaney [sadly underated as a LH]
MW-a chap named Greb, Walker, Flowers,Ace Hudkins
WW- Jack Britton, Ted Kid Lewis
LW- Benny Leonard, Lew Tendler, Charley White, Rocky Kansas,
FW- Johnny Kilbane, Johnny Dundee,
BW- Pete Herman, Kid Williams
FW- Jimmy Wilde, Pancho Villa
Pretty fair group...

My favourite era growing up and watching fights weekly at MSG and 5 fight clubs-
HW- Joe Louis
LH- Billy Conn, Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore
MW- Tony Zale, Jake LaMotta, Charley Burley, Marcel Cerdan
WW- fella named Ray Robinson, Kid Gavilan,Carmine Basilio,Billy Graham
LW- Ike Williams, BEAU JACK, Bob Montgomery,Sammy Angott,Willie Joyce,J.Bratton
FW- Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler, Chalky Wright
BW- Manuel Ortiz
And so many more top fighters plying their trade monthly and more...

Right now, truly the best of all possible worlds.

 

the 70s was pretty exciting and the Fab 4 era that followed, then Tyson eventually came along to pick it back up again giving us the mid 90s into the 2000s which was a good time for boxing.

BUT the 1930s, 40s and 50s has got to be boxing's pinnacle, there will NEVER be another time like it!

mid 80's up until now... all the eras that I have been able to witness are my favorites... it was the rise of Tyson that changed me from a fan into a rabid fan.... a few of my friends shared the Tyson fascination but didnt get into the other divisions like I did
