Hi dftaylor. You know I respect you and your comments as an esteemed poster but I must say I don't agree with you on this one. I like both guys and frankly all of us who love boxing must appreciate special talents like these 2 who are amongst the best pound for pound today. There may be more better known fighter ranked higher than these 2 pound for pound but in reality are not as good pound for pound as this 2. I will accept that I may be totally wrong on this and Donaire might make look an idiot however my pick here is Rigondeaux. I believe his polished skills, talent and accomplished amateur pedigree will be key. Donaire will defeat 99% of those he fights but not Rigondeaux. Personally I would prefer Rigondeax had 15-20 professional contests under his belt but we can overlook his outstanding Cuban amateur pedigree. This is a real treat and I cannot wait.

I don't think the pro game suits Rigo at all. He won't like Donaire's speed and power, and her won't like the angles. Rigo has never beaten anyone in Donaire's class. He'll need to be strong and focused for all 12 rounds and I don't think he's capable of that.

    I'm looking forward to it.

But has Donaire fought anyone remotely close to Rigondeaux who I believe is a rare talent?

He's fought much more proven fighters, like Donaire, Montiel, Nishioka, etc who have all achieved much more as professionals. Rigo, while being undefeated, got clocked by Cordoba and went into retreat.

This isn't a developing fighter, this is a guy who is as good as he'll ever be. Yes, an elite amateur, but as a pro? He's done nothing that makes me think he can beat Donaire, who is just as rounded, just as talented and arguably just as special.

Faster hand, harder puncher, bigger man, more proven in big fights. Rigo appears to have two modes: knock out overmatched opposition, or peck his way to a decision.

If you're not getting Donaire's respect, you're not beating him.

His face looks a bit chubby, if he struggles with the weight that might make the fight a little more interesting.

I think it is the superior technique of Rigondeaux that is swaying me in his favor in this match up. I think he will make less mistakes than Donaire come the fight. I fully accept I could be wrong on this but if I had to pick I will pick the Cuban. This type of fights are what boxing should be about.

I think the problem for Rigondeaux is that Donaire is such a powerful counter puncher. So Rigo is going to have to really be careful.

Neither fighter has shown that they are willing to take risks in fights. Donaire has been a level above everyone he has fought so he has never been tested. Rigondeaux has been dropped and completely stunk out the joint vs Cordoba.

The thing you have to envisage is who is going to be winning the rounds. The average round is going to have a lot of posing and posturing. Donaire will be on the front foot I expect and I reckon that alone will win him the close rounds.

Donaire is going to have real trouble landing on Rigo, as everyone does. However I think the deciding factor in who wins this fight is the footspeed and footwork of Donaire. He is just too fast and will be able to move in and out of position too quickly. I expect both fighters to be wary of counter punching because these are the guys who can set up counter shots to counter punches, thinking several steps ahead. I really expect a very tactical fight.

We have to ask ourselves what will happen if either fighter gets hurt? I think Rigondeaux will have more survival instinct. I'm sure he's been buzzed in fights a lot more than Donaire has. If Donaire takes one and gets dropped here I'm not sure he can survive, especially vs a vicious puncher like Rigo.

So both guys realise one mistake can cost them the fight and maybe even their career. When it comes down to it, I just don't think Rigo can match Donaires overall speed so I will take Donaire. I will have a big sum of money on him.
