Outside of Ali, there is a very strong case that Lewis has the greatest winning resume of any heavyweight. Holyfield is close but the losses add up for me.

Something not mentioned yet are Lennox was a road warrior. How many other champs really were? All those Holmes fights were always in Vegas, for example. Ali was of course. Who else? Lewis fought all over the place, and he certainly could have chosen the route of being a Bruno or Hide type homebody. That is, only 1 or 2 fights outside of his comfy settings.

The other extremely rare thing he did was to take on the powerhouse DKP fighters and somehow come out with wins. How many other guys ever sign a contract to fight those guys? And how many opponents actually bother to get victories over the DKP guy in those cross promotions?

You just don't see manager's putting their guy in against a DKP guy in a WBC title eliminator bout. Nope. What they do is go after a different belt. Let alone the opponent has 15 straight ko's. And this fight against Butler is casually dismissed as a non factorand isn't even 1 of Lewis' big scalps.

But he was taking on the up and comers like Grant and Ruddock and Golata also--and getting the results. Most times, you see the champs looking for lots of soft touches and not the pedigreed up and comers.

And look at the guys he fought when he wasn't champ trying to get his title back---Morrison and Mercer. And he fights Ray in NJ, instead of making Mercer take his act on the road. Every other manager out there does not take that fight and if they do, it is not held in America.

I happen to think Lennox fought the sternest competition--when he simply did not have to--since that Foreman 73 -76 run. Who else went into that type of hornet's nest anyway--Weaver for a 3 year period or so & Tate for a few years. You know, a long string of tough back to back to back fights or like the above 2 guys, as consistent underdogs and continued to win anyway and buck the odds?

Lennox has wins over greats like Holyfield and later Tyson but also much of his defences were against very good oponents which are often underrated.

Young Briggs, Ruddock, Rahman, Mercer, Morrison, Tua, Golota. Todays top ten would look a lot better with these guys in it.

He also has a legit win over Vitali Klitschko.

Ali is the only man with a definite better resume.

Lewis and Holy compete for number 2 resume imo.

    No. Not at all.

Lewis was younger and much less shopworn than Holyfield when they fought. Still Holyfield managed to make the second one reasonably close and wasn't close to being in stopped in either fight.

When Holyfield beat Tyson, he was the older and more shopworn fighter. He was generally seen as clearly past it, even shot by some. Still he stopped Tyson in the first one and made him foul himself out in the second.

As for the thread question: top 5, I'd say.

2nd only to Ali for me.

Imagine if he had managed to fit a Wlad fight in as well!
