I agree! No reason why boxing shouldn't become big in China too, what with their love for betting, and given the factors you mentioned above.

This thing has to be good for world boxing. China is a huge, unexploited market! :good

Shiming won't go very far in the pro game, can't see him being suited to it at all, probably the least likely gold medalist from the Olympics that will make the switch over.

He will make Arum a **** load of money either way, he's a massive star in the country with biggest population in the world, so he's going to make a lot of money himself due to this. Way of the world unfortunatly, whether he deserves it or not.

If it can have a knock on affect of making the sport more popular in China, it's probably no bad thing

You're conflating two completely different issues here.

Saying "Zou shouldn't be getting paid that much in his debut" isn't the same argument as "Boxing shouldn't gain a foothold in the PRC where there are oodles of potential fans with a burgeoning economy" - nor are the inverses of those statements synonymous.

The more the merrier, and yes, this very global sport ought to have a presence in the biggest country in the world. That doesn't mean the proper way to go about it is to coddle and overpay a paper medalist whose skills have already eroded and weren't ever going to make him a great pro even in his prime.

It's a fast-track shortcut. Disagreeing with it as the means to an end doesn't mean a longer "silk road" can't be viably built over time.

Numbers, neither USA or UK have the number of people, that China does, and on top of that add the Boxing fans abroad...Then the fight venue in Macau (lots of money).

    Being a draw??

My opinion? He will go the Chris John route, in the sense that he will get a strap, but stay fighting locally ( or even regionally) as a national hero fighting non-household names, and making himself rich doing it, and fame being the best to his fans and nation.

I was showing my enthusiasm for the fact that they're building this guy up to be a star, which has to be good for boxing if China gets onboard big time because of him. What he is paid is just his market value at the moment given his likely future earnings, assuming that he will become a big star in China, a potentially huge market. Is it fair? No, but this is show-business and it's how it works. Good for him and for boxing!

I think he has great footwork, good head/upper body movement, great reflexes and a nice left hook. He will go far. And to the people who somehow think he will be worse off in the pro ranks, I think he will actually do better.

Sure, but methinks it's an unlikely harsh reality. These guys are smart businessmen. I'm sure they know a lot more about the condition of his hand-picked opponent than we do if they're willing to risk 300 grand on this.

And who says they're making a profit on the lad off this one fight alone even if he gets KOed? ;)

You have to look beyond that stuff. That **** means absolute zero to me, I look at the fighter and nothing more. As a fighter, he is good.

If they pad his record, sure. He was facing top amateurs; naturally tomato cans are easier.

That isn't how to get near Viloria, though.

If he does get there without going a hard road, it's boxing corruption at its worst. :cus

Good, yes. Formerly very good (in the amateurs) but has lost a step.

Destined for pro greatness? I really don't think so.

Viloria doesnt like swarmers, but his counters would affect Zhou's china chin. Let's hope Viloria's low output would win him against Zhou (if they ever fight, coz Zhou's getting his early pro retirement)

Viloria doesn't like guys who can punch.

Shiming doesn't have anything in his offensive arsenal to get Viloria's respect, much less wear him for a late stoppage.

If anything it'll be all Shiming can do with his quick feet and dorsal elasticity to elude being hunted down by Viloria.
