Do you Want Broner to Stay at 147 or Move Down?

I hope he goes to 140 for a spell. too many good fighter there to miss out on. Or even back to 135 if a fight w/ Burns or Vasquez can be made.

The 147 division has some good dudes, plus most of the 140's can move up (the ones that I have seen)

I am thinking the winner of Maidana-Lopez fights him for a 147 title fights (assuming he bests Malinaggi) Thats a decent bout....Would have liked him to fight at 135-140, but if making weight and naturally he cam fight at 147 why not? I don't consider moving up in a weight (2 cl assess) a duck, because you are stepping in the ring with bigger cats.

Now lets say he gets 147 strap then drops to fight a no name 140 that will be a ***** move

Broner is going to 147 no if's, and's, or but's. If he is smart, he is going to steer clear of that nightmare that is the 140lb division. Too much risk and a fraction of the reward (that is 147). 147 has a lot of has beens that can generate him easy wins and more money. Cause let's face it, the dude gets hit too much and is a KO waiting to happen. I honestly do not see his power carrying up to 140 either. Gonna love seeing this dude get KO'd. How anyone sees talent in him is beyond me.

 

He has far more serious options at 140.

 

That's what I've been saying even before the fight was signed. No one at 135 wants to fight him and all the names at 140 are tied up. Yet you still have idiots who think he's ducking 140.:-(

 

140 is where he's moving if he plans a move down. There's no way in hell his management will be stupid to send him two weight divisions below after moving up. That kind of move could ruin him.

 

Everyone is ducking someone according to at least someone out there.

the weights don't mean a ton to me. broner is at 135 now. 5'7". 71 inch reach. walks around at similar weights to the guys at 140 and 147. if he's fighting top 140 lb guys at 147 he won't be the guy with some huge weight advantage.


i just want to see him fight top guys. i doubt we'll see that, though. unless he's fighting on ppv with floyd, i can see him taking easy touches for only a bit less money than he would get against the top 140 lbers with GBP (peterson, matthysse, and garcia.)

I cannot disagree with you on the point that the question was what you want to see. Historically, it was important for a fighter to clean out a division to make him more marketable so today I think fans tend to put more weight on this than the quality of challenges and business of boxing. unless you spend your whole career there will always be one fighter in a division that someone will point to to say you did not clean out the division. I think, which is a contrary view than yours, that it is far more important that he makes the best fights possible for the weight he feels comfortable with. I also think it is important for the business of boxing that he (any other fighter out there) become as marketable as possible. the long term viability of the sport requires fighters who can put bums in the seats . . . so his success (the same as Pac, Floyd, Canelo, Klitschko . . . etc) is great for the sport and makes me as a fan happy.

Point taken. But I don't believe pushing him up to 147 to face a Paulie Malignaggi is gonna' accelerate his marketability that much. If they were pitching him against a Victor Ortiz or a 147 Cotto, then yeah, I could see it working. But Paulie? Someone who hasn't been relevant, marketing wise, since Khan beat him? I have my doubts. Also, whilst that there (the business) helps the sport, it's also what's killing it. Usually fighters don't start selectively picking financially rewarding fights until after they've cleaned out divisions and faced the best (see Pac, Cotto, Mayweather, etc). Broner, it seems, has already fast-forwarded to that stage despite him being only 23 and having all the time in the world. If already he's potentially missing out on some great fights, then that's pretty **** for the sport, if you ask me.

It's also worth mentioning that the 147 division isn't the goldmine it used to be. Outside of Pacquiao and Mayweather (two guys who Broner will never face), there aren't many fighters there that are gonna' help him boost the profile of the sport. I also have my doubts about what he's gonna' do after Paulie. I mean, if he's planning on sticking to 147 (or go to 140) to feast on a disappointing opponent while he waits for the bigger names to free up, then I would have been much happier if he remained at 135 to give us more intriguing matchups against the likes of Vasquez and Abril. Because the validity of his move to face Paulie depends entirely on what he does afterwards. If he goes on to fight decent guys in and around that division, then it would have been an excellent move. I really believe his best fights -- the ones you talk of helping the sport -- are going to be against those people that are currently residing at 140 (not 147). But because they're not moving up to 147 any time soon, I kinda' disapprove of him quickly going there ahead of them.

 

Where is the option to want him to go to jail?
