They did actually, not in any great detail, but there names would get thrown about. They used to do interviews on the radio and **** quite a bit to. Wouldn't say they were particularly popular in comparison to our othe rsportsmen, but to say no one knew who they were would be wrong, especially after they began headlining their own cards here.
A household name amongst casual boxing fans yes. Why would anyone tune in to see Bernard Dunne if Andy Lee is headlining the card and Dunne is not even fighting.Lee fought top of the bill a few times I recall so he got lots of exposure along with Paul McCloskey.
even outside of areas like Limerick? most of the people in Cork didn't know who the **** I was on about
oh-er mssus! well of course a casual irish boxing fan is going to know irish boxers, most casuals would know who Coleman Barrett is aswell ah yes the old Lee/McCloskey bills, it's all coming back to me now
Fellow boxing fans! Great of Macklin to take the fight. He has now risen significantly on my respect-o-meter. The thing is that Macklin can still come out of this looking like a winner. He will however need to do a few things that neither Ouma, Proksa, Rosado or Ishida managed to do. Manage 1 of the following: a) back Golovkin up for more than 15 seconds. Do this each round. No fighter has managed this before. Kassim Ouma came close but it was more down to hit and sidestep. b) hurt Golovkin visibly. A real good crack in the teeth. A nose running blood. A semi-closed eye. Some blood anywhere. Manage this and Macklin has still bested the rest of GGG's opponents so far. c) win a single round. How about it? Go out there and win three minutes of boxing. Some say Kassim Ouma won rounds 3 or 4 against Golovkin, but in retrospect that is highly disputable. No power behind the shots. Win a single round hands down decisively and Macklin will earn respect. d) last 12 rounds. The last opponent that lasted the full fight was Amar Amani back in 2008. He lasted the whole 8 rounds. Defending, moving and spoiling. If Macklin last 12 he has still done better than the rest. So get ready Matthew "the Knife" Macklin! You can still win it while being escorted to the local hospital.
I like Macklin and he's put on some good performances against Sturm and Martinez. I can see him moving and landing on Golovkin for a few rounds, before he starts to to tire and Golovkin starts to land - but with much more effect. Probably a late stoppage for Golovkin, but I can see Macklin making it to the end, having been knocked down.
You're making GGG to be some mythical beast, which he isn't. He has his flaws and Macklin will be looking to take advantage of them. Whats Macklin got to fear anyways, he's been in with some of the best already?
Macklin is significantly better than anybody Golovkin has faced so far so I wouldn't be shocked if Macklin last the distance either. I think a sustained beating could be the end of Macklins career though.
Martinez is the best. Sturm was one of the best, in spite of all the dodgy decisions and all that other stuff that people slate him for, with some good names on his record. Macklin faced him in Germany to boot.
The thing you have to think about was during that time all those cards were being shown in every pub in the Country on Saturday nights (The busiest night of the week) So everybody even those Aul ones who couldn't give a shite about boxing coudln't help but glance up at the TV to see who was fighting. Along with that all the fighters were getting back page coverage in the papers and for the last two Olympic games Andy Lee has been in the RTE studio doing analysis. Our Boxers are our most well known athletes along with Golfers, Footballers & Rugby players.
Had to go for Macklin as I haven't seen Golovkin, so I can only judge off his record, which opposition wise is pretty poor, especially considering he's a world champion, but he's beaten everyone put in front of him in style.
Only the Martinez fight compares to fighting Golovkin. Sturm in Germany may be a difficult task, but its not a scary proposition. Not that Macklin would be scared, but you see where I'm coming from...Sturm may jab you, he may throw nice bursts, but there is nothing that is going to potentially take you to the cleaners or really hurt you. If Sturm can win a fight by just nicking it with a little extra quality he will, he won't go all out to demolish you. Even the Martinez fight has a slightly different feel to it. You're probably going to go looking for Martinez before he starts looking for you. He'll punish you with heavy shots if you're careless, and he may step it up in bursts if he senses you've done your best work, in that sense he's opportunistic, but Golovkin comes out first bell and finds you with heavy shots. In this one its a different mentality, the potential ways it pans out are much different to the above, there are things to fear that I wouldn't fear with my fighter going in with Sturm and Martinez. How Macklin deals with that remain to be seen.
macklin should have fought geale, lee or quillin those are fights he could win against golovkin hes ****ed.
