There's more to the story. At work at the moment so cannot elaborate too much but Bollox has got the basics down to a tee :good

Samart had incredible reflexes; he was a master defensive boxer with an iron chin and, funnily enough, a big punch as well.

The greatest Muay Thai fighter of all time and even considered such at the time.

After hundreds of fights and breaking up with his manager, the brilliant Liverpudlian Charles Atkinson, Samart had lost motivation. He was forced into that fight, the weight cut went horribly, and Fenech destroyed him.

And yes he had to go into hiding afterward. Not just from masses of angry civilians who thought he'd thrown the fight but the usual array of Thai gangsters/gamblers.

    I found time :D

Thanks for the information. What were the odds for this fight? Knowing what you've all stated, it's not hard to conclude that Fenech would win, but was the outcome a surprise at the time?

As I say, from what I can gather this was supposed to be a sub-feather super fight between undefeated fighters. Fenech the bulldozing ex-Olympian, Payakarun the slick punch picker.

Seeing as those kinda' matchups have always been the hardest to pick and the big national followings for both I'd say Fenech's decimation of Samart should've surprised everyone except from the Thai, who told his corner he was done after the first round.

I remember at the time Arthur Mercante Snr who refered the fight said Fenechs Ko of Payakaroon reminded him of the Marciano Ko of Walcot

There is no way in hell Joe Bugner didn't give Jeff Fenech a blowjob after his fight with Zaragoza.Would have made his shameless cheerleading all the more pointless if he didn't.

I'm hearing he wasn't brilliantly looked after at that time, I'll ask him meself next time I'm out there. True of many Thai's of course.

What fight did Richard Steele let a Thai get unnecessarily punished? Kittikasem-Arbachakov? That was nasty.

    yup.

Steele giving the home fighter every extra chance of pulling it off.

then you look at stoppages like Benn vs Eubank I and i'ts hard to figure the man out.

Just finished Fenech-Callejas (I think in highlight form). More of Fenech being Fenech. It's amazing how much pressure he is able to put on and just keep going. This one had a little more dirty fighting than the other two -- but I think that goes to both fighters. It has to be disheartening to some of these fighters to just have this guy never let up.

    Any background behind this fight?

One thing I noticed in the various fights -- each one has a moment or two where it looks like they found a moment of offense that they might capitalize on. In this fight, Callejas found the mark with an uppercut several times, but they just couldn't do enough or keep Fenech off them long enough to do it (until the 2nd Nelson fight at any rate).

Callejas was a big puncher. If I'm not mistaken he was a titlist at super bantam and these two fought for a vacant featherweight title.

    Good fight.

Before the fight Fenech was told of a comment Callejas had made about him. Fenech said "oh he said that did he? Well, nobody puts me down but my mother. He'll pay bigtime"

Fenech then offered to "take Callejas outside and do it all over again without gloves", after another Callejas comment after the fight

Just finished the Fenech - Villasana fight. A lot of fun -- 12 rounds of essentially the same thing. The only thing more impressive than Fenech's tenacity was the main announcer (quite excitable!).

Was Villasana a worthy challenger? They made a big deal about how Fenech beat this guy like nobody had, but he came into the fight with a 4-3-2 record. Was it just a matter of him being near the top and still fighting well (like a draw in his prior fight to Esparragoza)?

The esparagoza - villasana fight was real close because esparagoza dominated the early rounds and villasana dominated down the stretch.

Have you heard the one about how he was giving someone a hiding in a streetfight and the guy's sister smashed his face in with a shovel?
