Chris John has a reputation for never fighting outside of Indonesia, for some reason. Lets please set that straight. The location of Chris John's last 10 fights: 2012- Singapore 2012- Singapore 2011- Australia 2011- Indonesia 2010- Indonesia 2009- USA 2009- USA 2008- Japan 2008- Indonesia 2007- Japan Yes. Only 3 of his last 10 fights have been in Indonesia. On April 14th he defends his belt against Satashi Hosono in Indonesia. That will make it only his 4th fight in his home country in his last 11. I swear Chris John is one of the most hated fighters alive, and for no good reason. Now you know better, so please refrain from comments about John holding the belt hostage in Indonesia and only ever fighting in his home country.
It's the close win over JMM and the fact that he hasn't fought a rated featherweight since Juarez in 09. Tremendous fighter who couldn't capitalize on the biggest win of his career. Would love to see a fight with Donaire before John is too badly faded
Agree with the above posts. John vs. Piriyapino last year was a great fight... I've brought that up many times over the past couple months, really underrated in my eyes. Surprising to see both of them push each other and look so good.
His claim to fame was, robbing Marquez and only winning 3 rounds. Very good fighter, was underrated IMO, but if he really thinks he beat Marquez and he thinks he's that good he's delusional. He's no "Dragon" more like "The Gecko" or "Salamander". Even Indonesia will tire of him eventually and needs to fight at 126 or 135. He threw his career away he could of fought Salido or Lopez at least and had a chance. Mikey, Gamboa, or Russel Jr would destroy him now.
Yordan may not have been rated at the time he fought John, but he was rated previously, and has since earned another rating after knocking out Villanueva and out-pointing Choi. He's a legit and good contender and a pretty good scalp to have. Plus...Piriyapino looked to be a legitimately good fighter, and was really only a half step behind the Dragon, at most, at any point during their fight. Unheralded, but hardly unskilled. John;s quality of opposition is a little underrated, and as NS already stated, his reputation for being a stay at home fighter is a bit unfair.
Giving John only 3 rounds in that fight is an absolute joke which shows the most bias agenda from whoever feels that way.
Those are fair complaints one could debate. However, the oft claim of him not fighting outside of his home country is not debatable. He travels as much as any other titlist (with the exception of those primarily based in another country; ie Klitschko's and Germany, Cubans and America).
I believe that John beat Marquez. I always scored it 6-6, with the two point deductions it became 114-112 every time. I recently re-watched it for the fourth time, and came up with a final tally of 115-111 for John... As for the deductions, the first was a little premature but not out of nowhere and JMM was landing below the belt multiple times after that first deduction, so that's his own fault for lack of IQ. When you get one deducted, you know you're on a tight leash for the next one. Instead he landed some hard low blows... In my eyes, he deserved to have one point deducted, so a 114-113 score is, in my ideal reffing/judging scenario, the correct score. Calling it a robbery is simply ******ed. This fight is damn near a case of hearsay. Most everybody hasn't watched it. They hear "robbery" and run with it.
John and whoever thinks he won is a joke. If he was half as good as some think he was he'd be on the p4p list. Competitive yes. Beat Marquez? Hell ****ing no. And if you think I'm biased go **** yourself. Any Mexican here will tell you I've criticized Chavez Jr more than anyone and I say it like it is. John is skilled, but as the fight went on he ate combination after combination especially to the body and looked lost like an amatuer vs. a pro. Hometown cookin at its best. ROBBERY.
Dude, one of the story lines in the fight to me was that Marquez didn't land more than a couple combinations. He'd land a hard lead shot that would rock John then John would use head and foot movement to make Marquez miss with every follow up. And the one of the other ones was that I felt John outworked JMM in regards to the body. We literally saw two completely different fights. Being that you even brought up ethnicity, I would question your agenda and stance on the matter.
:deal Chris John is a fraud and a disgrace to boxing. I'm glad he rarely gets any credit for his shitty career because he doesn't deserve any. I look forward to the day he gets KTFO into retirement. Hopefully by Donaire Traveling Champion? more like Travesty Champion
