But how does that make him over rated?

He is a belt holder, largely untested with allot of potential? Outside of the Goldenboy and Showtimes press offices is anybody saying any different?

Fighters shouldn't hold belts until they're proven world class IMO because it devalues them and Alvarez isn't proven yet. The same goes for Chavez Jr and Cleverly, paper champions who were gifted belts by their promoter.

I know he's 22 and still has ages to go in his career. Some people saying "how many other 22 year-old have his record and how many other 22 year-olds fight elite fighters?" That's fair enough but how many other 22 year-olds are hyped to the moon and talked about as if they're the best thing since the light bulb?

All he is to me at the moment is a classic PPV star. Good but not great, protected because he makes money and can't afford to lose because promoters only care about the bottom line.

  3. A purely manufactured champion. Was handed a 'World title' by fighting a Euro level career Welterweight and in the two years since has defended against a bunch of over the hill shot to **** has been's and C level contenders and is just now after two years and five defences fighting his first live opponent.

I view him as a circus act, there have been many great Mexican fighters who turned pro at 15/16 and became champions at 20/21, such as Erik Morales & Marco Barrera most recently but none of those had the kind of fame and fortune before they were champions as Alvarez has, the reason for it is simple, he's a freakshow.

A Ginger Mexican, does such a thing exist ? its like a unicorn or a fairy, a mythical creature that people just can't believe is out there. That's what made Alvarez so special, after all isn't it the very first thing we all noticed about him ? yes it is, That's what got him all the attention from the start, that and being young, not his fighting skills.

He's like Butterbean, Mia st. John or more recently Kimbo slice. Everybody loves a good Circus act.

Now that's not to say the kid can't fight, truth is we don't know if he can yet, we'll soon find out but that's my point the Kid is a 'World champion' incredibly famous and a multi millionaire from boxing and we don't even know if he can really fight yet.

He's the definision of a manufactured fighter.

Where do you rate Alvarez in this division? 12, 54? Just curious what your definintion of "world class" is...:think

This 22 year old is fighting a unification bout with Austin Trout but you are saying he is protected? That an easy fight in your opinion?:think

And what the hell is a classic PPV star?
Can you name me some other ones?:D

I'm a big fan of his style, shows a lot of patience for a young kid looks for openings and puts his punches together really well with speed, power and accuracy his defence is improving with every fight too.

He seems to get a lot of hate i think people expect him to be a world beater but are forgetting his age in the process. If he beats Austin Trout which I think he will he deserves his props.

Can you read? I clearly said in earlier posts that this Trout fight is his first step up and fair play to him for demanding it. Never did I say the Trout fight would be easy.

Trout is no 1 in the division at 154 because his victory over an aged Cotto is still better than any win Alvarez has currently. I'd also put Floyd as no 1 though if he ever decides to fight at 154lbs again.

A classic PPV star in my opinion is a fighter who's good but not great and is hyped into the stratosphere by arsehole promoters and dick-sucking media. De La Hoya was one in my opinion. Very good fighter who won son big fights but never an outstanding fighter. He lost his fair share of big fights too or got lucky decisions. Not trying to say he was ****, far from it. What I mean is was he worth having to pay to watch every time he fought?

Another example from current standings is David Haye (until Sky scrapped PPV). Very good fighter who doesn't deliver often enough even though he hypes himself massively (like promoters usually do for fighters but Haye's his own promoter). He won't fight unless it's PPV or a subscription channel, hence why he's not coming back to Sky according to Eddie Hearn.

The bottom line is this, just because a fighter does great numbers on PPV and attracts loads of attention doesn't at all mean he's a great fighter. More often than not those type of fighters are good but not great and we can think of other fighters who they duck cause they'd be beaten by them. Just my opinion.

Early developer physically, fights with maturity beyond his years but not sure bar the offensive skills he has that he's that good. World class guy but not sure what his ceiling is.

Good fighter, Trout offers the first real test of him stylistically.

What a crock of horse ****...

Just a ginger Mexican,a circus act??

Alvarez has serious talent for a 22 year old kid and if you can't see that then I'm sorry my friend you don't have clue what your talking about.

The more he fights, the more convinced I become. I thought Ryan Rhodes had a great chance to beat him due to his style being perfect for a counter-puncher. But in that fight Canelo boxed to more of a gameplan and showed great variation.

However, I can't help but think that Trout is all wrong for him and he is facing him at the wrong time.

To be fair, this is a very good point.

People shouldn't lose sight of the guys age. He's barely a man.

Being hyped by his promoters and fans is nothing he can control.

At the moment he is a solid world level operator with some improvement to come.

I've been a fan of Canelo for a while, I think he's a talent, love his style and the way he sets up punches.

But I can't rate him very highly as like others have stated he has fought damn near nobody.

Trout is a solid fighter who uses angles alot and this might trouble Canelo who seems a little stiff/flat footed.

If Canelo can beat him he will have seriously proven his worth.

I can read just fine and you said he was protected. If he wins he'll be in with Floyd so how on earth can you say he is a protected fighter?
Now someone who stays at home defending against B fighters for years is protected. I'm thinking Bute is a good example.

And saying he is a classic PPV star is just hilarious considering he's never headlined a PPV at all!

I have no clue why you are slagging off Oscar. Look at the list of fighters he went up against and he generated $680 Million on PPV in the process. He didn't force people to buy his fights so why you aggrieved he was on PPV in another country? I mean why on earth would you not take that type of money for Prizefighting? You got more value from Oscars fights than watching Tyson steamroll someone in 2 rounds after all.

  15. I can see the talent, we all can see it but talent alone doesn't mean anything, its what you do with it that matters and as of right now Alvarez's accomplishments just don't live up to the hype and success he's recieved.

I said he's a manufactured fighter and that's exactly what he is, he's been awarded fame and fortune without earning it. There have been countless amounts of great fighters over the years who've had tremendous success but for one reason or another never got the fortune or fame they deserved and that's my whole point really, Alvarez doesn't deserve all the rewards he's recieved.

He may very well go on to be the great fighter so many think he will become but what if he doesn't ? what if Trout beats him and then he gets beat again and again and fades into obscurity, will you look back and say "Man that Canelo Alvarez was a great fighter who deserved all the fame and fortune that he got" ? I wont.
