Thanks. Kessler is clearly a big seller.

If Bute didn't help sell the fight, then Froch should have done at least as well against Mack, after destroying Bute, right? Why did he not sell out the arena against Mack? I don't know how many American fans went to see Mack fight Froch, but there were hundreds of Romanians who came just because Bute was fighting, both from Romania and from the UK. Pascal sold 17.5k too, remember. I think Froch is just ahead, on the 10k mark now.

    1. Wladimir Klitschko 25-40k easily (61k record)
    2. Vitali Klitschko 30k easily (43k record)
    3. Hatton (although retired) 30-40k? (56k record)
    4. Haye 20-22k (30k record)
    5. Sergio Martinez (??) (40k?? record) - need to get a handle on this
    6. Kessler 15k+
    7. Mayweather 15k
    8. Alvarez 12k+ (???) - need to get a handle on this though. (35k?? record)
    9. Bute 10-12k (16,5k record)
    10. Froch 10k (20k?? record vs. Kessler)
    11. Pascal 8-10k (17,8k record)
    12. Abraham 8-10k (11k record)
    13. Stieglitz ??? (11k record)

Does no one else sell 8k+ on a regular basis? What does Pacquiao do? How about the Japanese boys?

Wow! Yeah! Margarito was a draw, but Clottey not so much. I guess I need to bump him up. Where would you put him in the top 10?

Second to Wlad, and he'd be first if he had any fight in Manilla. 50k in the Texas when your not American or Mexican is amazing numbers

if you're going to do this and be consistent, you first need a clear criteria, or formula - and apply it to each fighter without prejudice

ie average gate of last 3 fights

or average gate of top three gates

then rank them on their highest gate and you'll end up with two top tens

then average their position in each of the top tens and you'll come up with your answer

thats just one way of doing it, but the point is, decide your criteria first, then apply it consistently and without prejudice across the board.

your methods are too haphazard at the moment to be valid in my opinion. (I used to study statistics for the win)

I'll follow your progress closely, feel free to ask for advice etc

    cheers

Nothing stopping him. Very strange that he hasn't had a fight there since he became huge.

    1. Wladimir Klitschko 25-40k easily (61k record)
    2. Pacquiao 15-40k (50k)
    3. Vitali Klitschko 30k easily (43k record)
    4. Haye 20-22k (30k record)
    5. Sergio Martinez (??) (40k?? record) - need to get a handle on this
    6. Kessler 15k+
    7. Mayweather 15k
    9. Alvarez 12k+ (???) - need to get a handle on this though. (35k?? record)
    10. Bute 10-12k (16,5k record)
    11. Froch 10k (20k?? record vs. Kessler)
    12. Pascal 8-10k (17,8k record)
    13. Abraham 8-10k (11k record)
    14. Stieglitz ??? (11k record)

Thanks for that! Yeah, you're right!:good

This is what I started to ask for in my opening post.

The motivation behind this was broadly to find out how popular with fans who see the fight with their own eyes a certain fighter is.

However, even if I had a very strict criteria, there's a lot of variables that have cropped up that prevent a valid comparison:-the number of tickets depends very much on the opponent, on the undercard, on the price of tickets, on how much TV is pushing it, etc.

Then, as others have said, popularity can be measured in PPVs, etc/ too. My list takes no account of that at all.

So ultimately, is there much point in sticking to a very strict criteria? Or should I stick with a strict criteria as far as I can, all those things being equal, even if the other variables that I cannot control are much more significant in the grand scheme of things?

Am I not better off just accepting that the list/numbers will be quite rough, and using good judgement to approximate numbers and do the rankings?

Ultimately, what I really want from this is to be able to say something like: Froch is a bigger draw than Ward, and here's the evidence.

What do you think? What is your advice? How should I best do this?

    Thanks again!:good

Wig, perhaps I should simply list fighters according to the most fans that have seen them live on a certain occasion (record attendance for one of their fights). That would be very simple and fair. And quite meaningful too, I guess. What do you think?

(Headline act only, because the arena is half empty for undercard fights anyway, right?)

I would use something like the following
1 - average of their last three fights
2 - average of their highest three gates
    3 - highest gate
    4 - 2 as a % of 3
    5 - 1 as a % of 2

then you can gauge a few things ie it takes into account if the highest gate was an anomaly etc etc

depends what youre trying to do mate

Damn, sounds like a lot of work.

Do you think the final list would look very different to the current list?

Adamek brought 44 000 fans for the Vitali fight in Poland. There were about 15 ukrainians in the first row.

    10, 000 vs. Briggs
    15, 000 vs. Briggs 2
    11, 000 vs. Cunningham
    12, 000 vs. Banks
    14, 500 vs. Golota
    10, 000 vs. Estrada
    11, 000 vs. Grant

Over 10,000 vs. Chambers and McBride, but I can't find how many exactly.

    Why?

If a guys a draw, hes a draw, what does it matter if the fans pay their money to go to the stadium or whether they pay their money to sit at home and watch the fight?
