I mean Duran was already a legend at 135, facing the American media darling and Gold medal winner Sugar Ray Leonard.

Leonard was a not a hype job and probably after Ray Robinson maybe the second greatest welter ever???

Leonard had beaten Benitez and was a young prime great fighter The average American fan didn't know how good Duran was, they would after that fight.

Who else has as great or a greater victory over a prime great fighter.

Ray Leonard whilst being a great fighter is not this invincible person people are making him out to be. His inside game while pretty good is still a weakness. He can be outboxed by opponents with a long reach and good jab (thomas hearns) and he relies on flurries for his knockouts which can be neutralized with a high guard (watch the windy wright Mosley fight).

While most people disagree with me I think Floyd sr did pretty well against him considering sr had a broken hand in the fight. Floyd sr is obviously not seen as one of the best welterweights.

Also in the late 80s he was pretty bad and relied on cheap decisions by running around for most of the fight and showboating for the judges. Marvin hagler fight being a prime example.

I'd say his two best attributes were his hand speed and his footwork. He relied on his footwork big time in the late 80s and used flurries in his prime. His jab was also good but he could be out jabbed by someone with a long reach and height advantage.

I'd say that hagler's victory over hearns was bigger than Durans victory over Leonard.

Leonard's victory over Duran in the second fight was better since he made Duran quit.

Hearns victory over Duran was better since he knocked out Duran in the second round.

    ----------

To Durans credit I'd say his victory over Leonard is better than Leonard's third victory over duran

I'd say that Durans victory over Leonard is better than Leonard's victory over hagler

I'd say that Durans victory is better than Thomas hearns unofficial victory over Leonard in their second fight.

Ali`s win over Liston. Sonny was viewed at the time as being close to invincible.

Jake LaMotta`s win over Sugar Ray Robinson. Beating the greatest fighter who ever lived is nothing to gloss over.

clearly you have a bias how on earth is Hearns victory over Duran comparable???? think!!!! about it. also Hearns was moving up to face Hagler and it was Hagler who was the middleweight. I would think that leonard beating Hearns the 1st fight is comparable because I see Hearns giving any welter in the history of boxing regardless of greatness some challenges to overcome.

yes but Jake had a twenty pound weight advantage. I believe Ali beating George Foreman is a greater win than ALI beating Liston. FOREMAN HAD DESTROYED FRAZIER AND NORTON AND ALI WAS OLDER AND NOT PRIME. No one gave Ali a chance many feared for his health. This was the slower older Ali. That has to be one of the all-time great victories.

Ali was a 7-1 underdog against Liston. Most writers thought Sonny would put him out inside 3 rounds. There was a stink around the second fight no question but the first fight has to be one of the greatest wins of alltime.

Hearns at 6"1 and a welter is a freak and I do believe would with his jab and boxing skill plus that missle of a right hand be tough for any welter damn near in history to out jab or outbox strictly form the outside. To pick this one fighter as the lone example of Leonard being outboxed by a tall jabber is really reaching. Leonard had an inside game and without it he wouldn't have heard the bell sound for the 15th rd vs Duran, who was a master at infighting.

the Leonard that fought Hagler beats the Winky that beat Mosely all day every day and twice on Sunday.

Leonard could box, could dance and had great footwork. Leonard could punch, take a punch, jab, he had speed, A chin, heart, Intelligence,
and he did it against the greatest fighters in an era packed with greatness. People today are quick to dismiss the intangibles, leonard was not only stylisticly gifted he had the intangibles that made him A truly great fighter

I don't see how Mayweather Sr was giving Leonard any problems unless its to pump up Jrs Chances, further more I don't see Jr surviving Hearns' but then again thats my educated guess.

Jake Lamotta was in ring as heavy as Oscar de la Hoya was against Chavez.
Ray Robinson was probably as heavy as Chavez but Chavez refused to go on the scale on fight night. (He couldn't make 147 in training, he was 143 on the weigh in)

Liston wasn't invincible and couldn't deal with Ali his high punch output.

Douglas over Tyson is a better victory than Ali over Liston
    (Bigger underdog, "better" stoppage)
