Tyson Fury is not a British fighter

Just to dispel the idea that Fury is a homegrown fighter and the British public should get behind him. In an interview with the Guardian today:

"All my people are from Ireland," Fury says. "I was born in Manchester but I am Irish. I have lived in Ireland, visited all my life and when I fight I represent Ireland. I'm a fighting man, a fighting man with generations of fighting men before me in my family. That's all we do, we fight."

Can a fight in New York or Boston be too far behind this "revelation"?

Gaz, I've often thought that Tyson Fury should have most have his fights in America from now on, and try and become a superstar over there. They will love him in Boston and NYC and won't give a **** where he was born, as long as he calls himself Irish. Believe me, the guy is gonna be huge. He's got the talent, the personality, age on his side, and he can exploit the **** out of his Irish background in the states.

He'll change nationality to suit what his plans are at the tome.

Shouldn't pan him too much for it, countless playersin other sports have done it, rugby and cricket in particular.

'all his people are from Ireland' so why dos'nt he live there then? And is his wife Irish? If this guy is so proud to be Irish then naturally marrying an Irish girl should have been first and foremost in his life plans so his children retain their Irish lineage.Or has this numbskull married an English girl from Manchester to then claim his children are also Irish?

fury, like macklin, is an englishman pretending to be irish to make more money.

irish people in general have a strong aversion to english people in general due to the history between the countries. thats not to say irish people dislike english people but irish people have a real sense of independance from england and the worst thing you could do to an irish person would be to say they are part of the united kingdom.

when people like macklin and fury try to exploit the irish fans like this, they fail. nobody cares about them in ireland and nobody will. the americans will believe what they are told though and thats where the money is so these guys are doing a good job. but if they ever expect a heroes welcome in dublin they can forget about it. they will never be accepted as irish by the irish people in ireland. mackin was fighting out of birmingham until he realised he could make more money pretending to be irish. fury was all british until he realised the same.

I personally think it's good that he's clarified his identity, because he seemed a bit confused before. I assume Tyson and his extended family will be returning home shortly, and can only speculate why, despite their intense love of Ireland, they decided to leave and move to England.

Agree with you lads. Maybe the Irish won't give too much of a moneys about this news but the New Yorkers would love an Irish HW prospect.

Is there really that many "Irish" in NY?

I know that British citizens are the largest ex-pat community.

I have to agree with this 100%.

Jesus Christ, I hate it when fighters do this sort of thing. "I'm from here and I represent this place" when they weren't even born or raised there. It's just irritating. Fury and Macklin, you're English lads. Both were born in Manchester and Birmingham and have Manc and Brummie accents. You're both English, end of. Same way I'm English because I was born in Liverpool, raised in Liverpool and have a natural scouse accent. I'm a scouser. Same way they are a Manc and Brummie.

Be proud of your Irish roots, that's fine. Have it on your shorts or whatever. Going around claiming you're an Irish fighter who represents Ireland and having the Irish national anthem played before the fight though, it's ****ing ridiculous. Carl Frampton, Andy Lee, Martin Rogan. Those fellas are Irish.

Same way Lennox Lewis was a Brit, not a Canadian. He was born in Britain, spent most of his childhood in Britain and missed Britain when he had to move away. He moved to Canada but always said he still always felt British at heart, even when boxing for Canada in the Olympics. It's a controversial subject but at the end of the day, I'm a firm believer in where you're born in raised is your true nationality.

Why do you guys get so mad about this nonsense?

Theres millions of people in the UK with direct Irish heritage. Thats what 100s of years of immigration does. I dont recall so many people getting bent out of shape about Lennox suddenly discovering he was a rasta.
